Hi BH. With the north magnetic pole migrating like this, I wonder if my compass will still be useful several years from now. Thanks for finding and sharing this interesting link with us on here BH, and the best of regards.

As long as Polaris does not start moving around rapidly, I think I will be OK in my back yard. Interesting information, however. It will be fun to watch it move over the next few years and see if it speeds up more, slows down, or just keeps moving along as it is now. Possibly, since it is fairly near the geographic North pole, that may actually be a point with less resistance to movement and the magnetic pole keeps speeding past until forces stack up more when it gets farther away from the axis of rotation.

Interesting you say that Marshall. They're going to keep needing to recalibrate navigation and GPS equipment, but it looks like more frequently. Simply because it is moving at an irregular rate.

A number of airport runway numbers have had to change because of the change in magnetic North - the number is the magnetic bearing divided by 10.

The title of the thread contains the phrase "faster than previously thought". It's not that we were thinking wrong, it really is moving faster now as indicated by measurement.

Possibly an explanation for climate change?

You absolutely have to be kidding? I hope? Definitely it cannot be any sort of explanation.

For one thing the numbers wouldn't add up. Climate change is primarily driven by human fossil fuel consumption. Aerosol pollution partly offsets the greenhouse gases. But beyond a reasonable doubt the dominant factor in climate change supported by causal models of atmospheric radiative transfer is humans burning carbons. The following graphic based on NASA data shows the effects of natural and industrial contributions and is quite clear.

IMO denial of human caused climate change is intellectually on a par with flat earth conspiracy theories. The difference is that flat earthers are small in number and no threat to the future of the species. They are funny and can be laughed at.

There has been a lot of study over the past many years concerning the deviation in the magnetic pole signatures. If some predictions play out, climate change may become a backseat topic. https://phys.org/news/2018-12-earth-...oles-flip.html

Yes. The difference being that one has the option of considering whether to do something about climate change. There are no alternatives to just going along for the ride for a magnetic pole reversal.
