Default Rock n roll Ain't Light Pollution, but.....

my backyard doesn't know that. Two huge factors make it hard for me to have some decent viewing ( yeah, I know, preaching to the choir):

    1) Trees and 2) I live in an orange Bortles zone.

I know the towel over the head trick, but are there any recommendations to increase the viewing experience with filters, types of EPs or scopes that will increase my chances of better viewing. BESIDES taking a scope 50 miles from here, which is not an option on a daily basis.

Towel (or inverted t-shirt) over the head, an eyepatch to jumpstart and maintain dark adaptation (when consulting chart or app), and some light shields made of tarp and frame to block street and porch lights. That coupled with choosing reasonable targets for the conditions and aperture, you'll do ok.

Thanks, Bryan. I never tried the light shields the last time out, so I will definitely work something up this time.

You know, the trees here must be sucking up Miracle-Gro from the nearby reservoir. They've grown exponentially! I'd cut 'em down but they're too dang big, I'd end up looking like the wicked witch of the west, or was it east? I digress.....

Maybe I should just flood the driveway this winter and have my own ice capades instead. Lol

Without saying too much. Someone cut down trees at one side of their garden but left others standing in order to block someones sky view. What they did not realise was it was a godsend, the trees actually block out the street lights. Also, as the heavens rise from the east and the trees are in the west, it worked out perfect

Actually, Bryan, I may not need to construct light shields, as the only direction I get street and porch light issues is from the East. That angle is blocked by my shed, so that's a possibility. However, that would raise yet another issue in the winter. It would require keeping a 25' path clear of snow. Ugggh !
