    Default A whole new mania

So perhaps two weekends ago, my eldest came home for a visit and to hang out with his younger brother, who still lives at home with us. I wasn't really doing anything, so they asked me if I should like to play Magic: The Gathering with them. So he let me borrow a few of his decks, of which he has many, and we sat and played. For hours.

The next weekend he pops by with his entire collection, says you're in this now, its apparently a custom in his gaming circles to let new initiates choose cards out of their collections to start a new deck of their own. So I draw out about 200 cards or so, said thank you, I really want to start looking into buying my own for the next time we sit down and play.

That's when the rabbit hole opened up under me.

This game is like crack. Except I've never done crack. Man, there's different sets, collections, booster packs, fat packs, duel decks, dice, tokens, boxes, card sleeves, about thirteen dozen shady online dealers and vintage cards that sell in the hundreds of dollars. A piece. I'm looking through all this new stuff and come to the realization that the collection he has must represent easily thousands of dollars spent. This is worse than astronomy, than hawking eyepiece ads day after day. Soon I'm going to have no time at work to actually do work. So I made the hard decision to go in in for a couple boxes and cut myself off, because one can easily get lost in the dopamine euphoria from opening booster pack after booster pack hoping for shiny awesomeness. At least I'll be competitive next time we all decide to throw down, with my cool pirate chest full of new cards....

There's always the recent revival of the 8 bit video gamming consoles if you need a more budget friendly competitive activity.

Back in my comic book collecting days over 20 years ago, when I lived in Vegas, my comic collecting buddy was also a Magic fan and collector. Being a single fellow, he'd easily drop $100.00 every weekend on Magic cards. It was nuts.

This was the mid-90's. Wonder what his collection is worth now?

    Have fun, Don!

Tried that. The games I used to play just don't seem to keep my interest like they used to. Like I often say, that which we call nostalgia is often nothing more than faulty remembrances generated by a defective amygdala.

I don't want to even thin on it. Makes me wish I'd gone harder into baseball cards when I was a kid.

I was big into Romance of the Three Kingdoms. Still am, actually. Played the games, read the books, several times - Luo Guanzhong has a permanent spot on my bookshelf right next to Tolkien and Patrick O'Brian. Saw any related movies I could find. Just something about that whole piece of history I find ultra-cool, just a turbulent era with a lot of heroes and villains. So I saw Magic had released set of cards based on those characters, thought: Awesome! I wanna get those!

Forget it. Apparently its vintage now and several of those cards go for hundreds and up.

The value collectors put on TOYS I just find mind boggling.

If I had the interest to buy these back then, I'd probably be neck deep in astrophotography right now. Cause I could afford to be.

    Manias ?
    I had a mania once.
    No...wait a minute...that was a mango. Sorry.
But seriously, Don that's pretty cool that you have a common interest with your sons that you can all be maniacs together...no kidding...enjoy!

I've been working hard to turn my grandson's into astronomy maniacs. I may even be making some Headway even a little in Road into their parents.

I've still got all those comics sitting in boxes, all bagged up and sealed with cardstock backers. There are about 6500 of them. One of these days I need to go through them and see if I've got any gems I could convert to astro gear.

Heck, if I could get a buck a piece for them...

I had a whole bunch of MTG cards. I got wrapped up in it.

They all ended up in the trash in the long run.

WOTC, Wizards of the coast or as I call them Wizards of the cash, sure know how to raise it... cash that is.

Don't get me wrong it's a fun game and a lot of skill is required to be any good, but to be good you have to have those 'strong' cards. In the words of WOTC "Gotta catch them all"!
