    Default Death Valley

Death Valley is only about a ninety minute drive from our house in Vegas. Dana and I manage to go there a couple of times a year for some really dark skies.

I was clearing out some pics and came across these two and figured I'd share with folks who have never been there.

The lowest point in North America is eighty-six meters (282 feet) below sea level. Here's a pic of me pointing to the sign that indicates where actual sea level is. The sign simply says, "86 meters". The mountain behind it is called Dante's Peak. We recently had an observation session on the other side of it... October, as I remember.

Here's the actual spot on the ground...

    Just sharing

Nice! Last time I was there I was going almost Mach 1 with my hair on fire in an F-4 Phantom.

Don't think I'd busted out the puke bag yet.

One thing I envy with you North Americans is the vast country and so many beautiful places, from the High Rockies down to death valley.
You guys are so blessed with these spaces.
Even though I live in Africa we do not have that huge land mass with such a beautiful array of landscapes. Don't get me wrong, we do have splendid parks and nature reserves, maybe it's just me and the grass looks greener on the other side.

I am a big fan of the mountains, so drop me in the Rockies or Alaska and I should be just fine, oh and leave the telescopes with me to, I may be gone a while!

When I lived in SoCal I would view there a few times a year. Still a great place, but it has been known to get really really hot and really really cold there. Melted a hand controller there on one trip. 120*+!

I was in Death Valley a few springs ago. A way-cool place, though I would not want to hang out there in summer. I would bet the DSO observing there would be outstanding--especially from higher elevations, like near Telescope Peak.

This sign is only about a quarter mile from the lowest spot location...
