    Default Thoughts on my fall migration

    For the sixth year, I'm getting ready for my fall drive from northern Michigan to the Pacific coast of Mexico. Like the Beverly Hillbillies, I load a ton of stuff into my vehicle and head southwest. In my case, the vehicle is not an old truck, but a Chevy Express conversion van.

    Last year, I brought my Vixen scope and my binoculars. I built some shelves in the van to accommodate the scope, mount and gear. This year, even more stuff is going. I'm taking my Astro Tech and my PST.

    I will be setting up a little solar observing area, as I have an unobstructed view of the sun for most of the day. And I'll have the Vixen under cover to bring out at night. Need to make some kind of light shield this year, unless the tree across the way has grown up to block the streetlight on the next street.

    As always, I will be travelling with my dog and three cats. I feel this makes me a rather unique person...

    Some things are different this year, as my sister died in August, so I won't be going to see her to say goodbye and show her how well-organized my little camper is. And there will be nobody to report to on my safe arrival at each night's destination. Sarah was always proud of me and was my biggest supporter in my crazy doings.

    I think often these days of a few verses of a very long poem by William Wordsworth, verses I found on a little piece of paper in my Dad's wallet after he died 20 years ago. They seem to have special meaning these days:

    "Though nothing can bring back the hour
    Of splendour in the grass, of glory in the flower;
    We will grieve not, rather find
    Strength in what remains behind."

    So off I go this Monday on my journey, thinking who knows what I will discover this time, whom I might meet, and what special connections with the world I could make along the way.
    Mary

    Safe travels to you, Mary. The words of the Wordsworth poem feel elemental to me, resonating at a deep level. Your thoughts about the journey also resonate, and seem like a great attitude to take with you. Looking forward to your reports from the Southwest.
