We had a parrot as well. I grew up living at the very edge of our small town. We kept chickens. One summer day while in the back yard I noticed a large parrot inside the chicken fence with the chickens. Where it came from, we never knew. We called the police and made a report, we asked all the closest neighbors, we even went to a nursing home about half a mile from the house just to check there. No one ever came forward to claim the bird. He obviously was some one's pet as he had a large vocabulary and enjoyed being petted and touched and never tried to bite anyone. He never tried to fly away and was left outdoors during the day frequently. He just decided to make our house his home. He stayed there for almost 30 years before he died supposedly from old age. The day he died was one of the few times I've seen my dad cry.

You know Oz...we had an other parrot some years before Blue Boy. He was smaller and all green, but he was still a big bird. He DID get away. This would have been in the late 70's. I always hoped he wound up something like you described. We never did see him again. I believe he actually had a leg band. But no one ever contacted us.
Did you feed your parrot with the chickens or did he fend for himself?

I am a bit relieved to have an explanation for the new avatar. I read about shaving and was afraid the blade had gone a bit too far north and carved out an eye. That would really have been taking the pirate theme too far!

He started eating with the chickens, but after it was apparent that he was there to stay, we fed him his own food. We contacted a vet and got things more appropriate for him. He still ate chicken feed anytime he wanted, but he also like sunflower seeds. Funny, he showed up summer of '77 I think it was, he was all green.

No way to know, but that is interesting. Did you notice if he had a band on one leg?

I don't believe there was a band on his leg. We tried very hard to find a possible owner and if there had been an identifying tag I'm sure the vet could have helped us find them. However, it does seem like an extraordinary coincidence. I can confidently say our bird was well taken care of and loved. He could have left at any time though, as I said he was free to roam about outside on his own. He never seemed to go far. We had a bell at the backdoor he could ring and an open carport that was enclosed on three sides and a comfortable perch for him there completely protected from bad weather. Nights and winters he spent in the house. As he got older, he spent more time in the house and the last two years of his life he rarely went outside.

Hi Mark. I have used the double patches when using the binoculars, but to no avail. Thanks for your great report Mark, and I love your new avatar.
