    40 years ago today, Viking 1 landed on Mars. First U.S. landing on Mars; it was followed by its twin, Viking 2, which touched down on Aug. 7, 1976. I was 11 years old and so hoping they would find life... I still have the Time/Life Nature Science Annual from '76 which details the missions:

    And Sally Ride (best last name for the best ride ever...!) became the first American woman in space aboard the shuttle Challenger (STS-7). Unfortunately, she died on July 23, 2012.

    I still remember the pictures from the Viking 1 lander running in our local newspaper at the time - exciting stuff!
