Unhappy Please help me navigate the hidden...

    ... traps and quicksand.

I've noticed over the past month or so LOTS of whacky subjects have been discussed on these boards, and it seemed like especially here in the Off Topic section that most anything could (and has) been politely discussed in an adult manner. It made me feel VERY comfortable here, as the only other forum I spend any time at is riddled with rules, trolls, and suspicion.

But today I log on to find the nice new guy from India posted an Off Topic thread that got locked in two minutes flat! Not only that he was accused of being a Troll.

    Wow!

I re-read it over and over, and I honestly don't see any hint of Trolling. The poster was quite polite too, so why the accusation of Trolling, and why the locked thread?

All I can guess is there are unidentified "Off Limit" topics. Please rectify the situation. Please list any topics that us Newbs might bring up and get ourselves in trouble.

I'd sure hate to ask a friendly question to only find out it was a dumb question, and that I am a Troll.

You may certainly define yourself as you see fit...

I'm going to take an educated guess, and assume you're referring to the "End of the World"/Niburu/Planet X thread.

That being the case (or not), a few minutes of using the search function on these forums, or use of Google will turn up all the evidence one needs that Niburu/Planet X and related bunk are just that... bunk. These and related topics have come up time and time again here on this forum, and serve no purpose: they convey no net new information, they discuss nothing based in fact, and become "sinkholes" for various bashing, name-calling, negative, time-wasting jabber, and consume the moderation staff's time and energy.

In this particular case, the topic was initially posted to the Beginner's Forum, and essentially suggests "we all turn our scopes to the heavens and search for the mysterious Planet X/Niburu..." wow, just wow...

Threads get locked after lots of scrutiny by the mod staff - we don't actively censor, kill "real" discussion or debate, or otherwise attempt to be heavy-handed and spoil anyone's fun... there are just going to be those cases where certain, unfortunate repeated topics that won't die a just death come up again, and either get locked, get the poster warned, or in some cases banned. It is easy to navigate among them - use the search function, use common sense, common courtesy, and good judgement before posting.

I think the moderators do a terrific job of keeping this board free the "trolls" and their associated nonsense so that it can keep its focus on amateur astronomy. Thanks!

when your FIRST POST on the forum is "the world is going to end in 2012" you get shut down

    i don't see a problem.

if someone with 100-500-5000 posts did the same thing, that is when adult discussion begins again.

I believe there is a sticky thread in this section detailing on exactly why you can post it. In other words...its against the rules.
