    Default Typical of astronomy vendors?

So I ordered a new telescope which should be arriving tomorrow. Shortly afterwards (last thurs) I decided to order another eyepiece and some accessories.

At the time, everything showed as 'in stock' which was the reason I ordered from that vendor. Shortly after ordering I receive an email stating that one of the items was back ordered. That's okay, I thought. The EP is really what was needed so no biggie, I'm patient.

I checked again today, and now via their website, all the items from that order show on back order - with delivery not until next month! No email or notification, if I hadn't pulled up tracking I would be just waiting and waiting. Granted it was the weekend, but the first email I received was automated too.

I feel really frustrated by this, as I said the only reason I ordered was they were in-stock and I was trying to get everything reasonably close in timeframe to my new scope.

Thinking I am going to call tomorrow, but assuming they stick with the Feb delivery time I'm pretty sure I'm going to cancel the order. Shipping next month is unacceptable, and I can easily order from any number of other vendors who show in stock for roughly the same price.

Is this kind of thing common with astronomy vendors or does it seem like a fluke? Really feels like I was either deprioritized or switched on.. probably over reacting but kinda upset.

Cant speak for the USA but the UK has its share of dodgey dealers and two in particular took the customers cash, never delivered and then closed down. No refunds at all.

On the whole in the UK I only order from two dealers who have shown consistent service and wont shoot me a line on stuff.
They are a little bit dearer sometimes but worth it for the peace of mind.

There are rogues in every walk of life. Not suggesting your dealer is completely dishonest but there have been some notable scams run in the UK by apparently reputable dealers.
Thirty spokes meet at the nave, because of the hole we may use the wheel.
A cup is moulded from clay, because of the hollow we may use the cup.
Four walls surround a hearth, because of the doors we may use the house.
Thus tools come from what exists, but use from what does not.

Welcome to the Astronomy hobby. This is quit common that the site shows in stock and it is actually on back-order. In the future CALL them and verify if you are expecting it quickly.

I waited 5 months to receive a Astro Tech RC 6 scope-- which was considered a fast shipment.

Sen: I'd be interested in knowing the company's name that did that to you.

I normally use OPT Telescopes and have never had an instance where they didn't ship right away.

I'll have been waiting 5 months for an accessory from Orion once I finally receive the item. It was in-stock when I ordered, but then became back-ordered.

Orion was pretty good about it, though. Sent me letters keeping me up-to-date as the ship date kept getting pushed back, and then eventually offered to cancel the order...I decided to wait it out.

They don't charge your credit card until they ship an item (and I'm free to cancel anytime), so I'm not complaining.

Some companies are a little (to a lot) slow on updating there web pages, like Joe said you may want to call before ordering to make sure that they do have it in stock. I have had that problem when ordering other parts.

It is, imo, becoming depressingly more and more common with vendors of all sorts and types. I doubt it's any more or less common with "astronomy vendors"...it's simply becoming an accepted way of doing business.

It happens in the RC world, the photography world, the aviation world...so why not here as well?

Its the economy.. no one can afford not wants the risk of carrying deep inventory. odds are they stock one item or even count on previous experience with drop ships or quick turn around from wholesale sources only now to find they are not keep deep inventory either.
I ordered a Dew Strap from HighPoint last month. NExt day I got a call from a real person. It was out and would be a week before they had more. I mad the choice to order a slightly more expensive brand and he fixed the order and shipped same day.
Inventories will be thinner these days, but a company dealing with it like the customer actually wanted the item tells you what their service level is.

JOE: How do you like the Astro-Tech 6" RC.. almost bought one of those.. ended up with a Meade Schmidt-Newtonian instead. Focuser is not as good but I liked the price.

There is nothing more frustrating than ordering something that you are led to believe as being in stock and then finding out it's not - that's if you're lucky enough that they actually tell you - post order, that it's out of stock - makes my blood boil - the best online retailers - and not just astronomy ones - openly display stock availability, and they are the only ones I will ever deal with.
