Default Long road to LA !

So we left cold wet windy Scotland at 0200 UT (Sat) ,taxi to Edinburgh airport, a flight to Paris ( 0610UT ) to catch a flight for LA at 1040 UT. The LA flight was late in leaving Paris by 40 mins. We take off and fly BACK over the UK , passing over Scotland (!!!) heading for Greenland. That just seemd crazy to me , lol. We arrived weary and tired in LA at 1340 local time. We had all been awake from 9am on the Friday morning, roughly 38 hrs solid , I csnt sleep on planes or trains or buses. I really hate folk who have perfected that particular art !

LA is big, real big ! Infact its scary huge to this ''wee scotsman'' ! Just over 4 million folk in the city of LA alone. As a point of reference, the population of Scotland is about 5.5 million !!! We decided to got get a meal , according to some hotel blurb, an Italian restaurant was about five minute drive from us, I asked how long on foot. I was informed that you could not really walk there. After getting a taxi ( it took seven minutes actuaslly !!) I soon realised why I could seen no pedestrains around , think I saw maybe four or five of them , they had painful , worried ,forelorn looks about there faces !

We have a car booked for today ( Sun) . That will be fun ! I am praying for a Sat Nav onboard that shows individual lanes and has an inbuilt camera that will alert me ahead of stops and lane changes !!! lol.

Its only Sunday morning , not even 9am, and it's like the Idianaoplis 500 out there !!!! I might just have to drive in me kilt and let them all know ''The Mad Scotsmans In Town '' !

Weather ? Scottish clouds have sneakily followed us by the looks of the grey sky outside. They says it 19c , feels like 14c. I can live with that though, I get like Icecream in hot weather, the wife and the two girls , well , they are your typical sun lizards !! They are ( atm ) gutted about the weather, me ? well I am trying not to giggle ( too much ) .

Today its ( after I pick up the car, gulp ) down towards Santa Monica, check out the beach , do some lunch for Mothers day ( girls can pay , lol , not my mother ! ). Then in the afternoon we are , apparently ! , going horse riding in Will Rogers State Park. The wife is a great horse rider, me ? well lets just say I can get by but I truely believe that horse power is something that should stay under the bonnet of a car, not under my legs ! Anytime we go horse riding , I always get the one that wants to show me its heritage came from Mustang stock !

Anyways , gotta go now , time to collect the car ( gulp gulp ) . I will use this thread to update ya'll ( hey ama speakin da lingo ! ) . I will of course try to inject my usual scots humour into it as I go .

    Clear Skies

    Pete

    Welcome to Sunny Southern California.
well at least it usually is.
I know the freeways here will be more foreign than the land mass you landed on.
Everyone here seems to be outracing the person next to them no matter what the speed.
I still get a kick out of it but Pick my lane and try to drive reasonable without being run over(and I don't drive slow)
I'm not too sure how long you plan on staying but if you have the chance ,try to sneak down to Palomar Observatory to check out the 200" (5.1m)F3.3 adaptive optics reflector.
It's an incredible feeling standing under it wishing you were the one imaging through it.
In any case welcome to the States and have a wonderful and safe visit
    Ken

    Hey Pete!

Ya I think you brought the clouds with you! Last couple days (Thursday & Friday) were record heat!

Agreed you probably don't want to 'walk' around in LA. (that's why everyone drives and the freeway is crazy!) Just wait till Monday AM and commute time!

Sounds like you have a great day planned enjoy your visit and welcome to America!

Hey guys ! Well thats the rental car picked. It's a Dodge Avenger ( my theory being i can 'dodge' about ,lol ) Decided to be real sensible and get the Sat Nav, no camera for lanes but hey ho , it got me back to the hotel.

The Sun has broken through now and spirits are lifted within the XX Chromosomes that are accompanying me ! The ladies are a smilin, lol.

Ken , I was warned to stay away from 405 ! Being Sunday morning atm , all the roads are a wee bit quieter, as Gordon points out , Monday commute time will probs be Freeway Madness, wee long lie in every morning methinks, lol. Still getting to grips with the scale of things ! Actusally this is not my first time in the States, we done FL a few years back , but never hired a rental, the driving here is a first. Fortuantely most of the places that the wife has picked ( I get no choice, I'm just the driver ! ) are all within a half hours drive of our hotel.

Ken , I will have a look online and see about the palomar, really fancy having a peek at that and getting a couple of pictures, thanks for the heads up Bud.

Thanks for the warm welcome to America, Gus , I shall be holding on so tight the poor thing will be going blue in the face !

Laters folk , a beach and a horsey await me !

    Clear Skies

    Pete
