I'm surprised none of you SoCal guys have mentioned Griffith Observatory - not that you can see much sky-wise from up there but it is a nice view of the metro area at night.

Yes Pete I would recommend Mt. Wilson if you can make the time, even more so Palomar but it is way down south by San Diego and you may not want to drive the freeways that far Once you get out here to Arizona things will calm down a bit as far as traffic goes.

    Enjoy your trip!

Pete it is still winter/spring and the only people at the beach are surfers and Lifeguard tryouts, most people here don't go in the water under 60f. We can tell the tourists by who is wearing shorts and "Mickey Ears". My wife works there, so we see it all the time. Here they are starting to mark the offramps with Numbers and the streets names, and remember some offramps have both north/south- east/west exits.
Enjoy the Black cause they can't take it back............

    Monday Freewayapolis500.

We ( thats that wife and daughters ) decided we were going to Universal Studies, just past Hollywood. Taking Gordons advice about waiting till after 0930 , we left at 1000am, it was no good, I think everyone in LA slept in this morning. I have never seen so many cars on a road ! Gawd knows why you guys build straight roads as well, you all just weave lane to lane ! Anyways , nothing ventured nothing gained, we set off. Wife wanted a few things from a store , so she googled a Wally store. Five miles from us, can't be bad I thought. Actually got there without incident, no recalculating, oh no , that was to come later , lol

Funny the wee things you notice in a different country, like the wrecked bus shelter ( man it was trashed ) just aroundd the corner from the store. In the parking lot I then sees the Security Patrol car, hmmm , I wondered as it cruised up and down the parked cars. We were in and out asap !!! Onto to Hollywood , recalculating ! the wife had entered the wrong address, Arrrrrgh !!! Saw some nice tight streets as we had to make some corrections. I have aged three years since driving here , I swear. Sat navs are great but get sucker by diversions and roadworks. There are a lot of diversions in Lalaland on a Monday, never see anyone actually working at the diversion ( bit like home that ) but it must be fun for the locals , seeing the pained expression of the rental drivers , frantically screaming at their Garmin to show the some mercy , or hopefully a new route. You end up having to just drive a bit in some direction for the Sat nav to register. Recalculating, recalculating.

Got there in the end, was not as busy as I had thought it would be. I am not really the whole thrill ride kinda guy but done the obligatory rides with the family. Actually the Studio Tour was kinda neat, wee bit of history there. It's amazing how small actual outdoor scenes are. all to do with camera perspective ( but hey , I knew that ;-) ).

Heat , yup there was heat, lots of it. In fact , when we were getting something to eat , a very kind lady serving us said '' You can go to First Aid for that sunburn '' I was touched by her thoughtfulness but explained that as I was Scottish , it looked worse than it actually was. I slapped my arm to show her. I think she was suitably impressed, or maybe she was being kind again. It started to sting five minutes later !

Hey , we even seen Jay Leno , man has that guy got a chin, kids wanted a picture ( no idea why ! ) Profile does not favour that him. If anyone sees him tonight or later , talking to a lovely looking young female black lady in a green dress, we were there in the throng. I thing Jay said maybe half a dozen words and then was whisked away by security to safety. nice work if you can get it !

Now , being an astronomer, I could tell the sun was setting soon. It goes a pinky red colour and gets low in the sky. Sensing it was getting nearer to the time Gordon suggested for driving back ( after 1930 ) and twas still light(ish) , it was time to head back.

By the times we get to the parking lot, the Sun had deserted me. I could see car headlights being switched on , not good . This was going to be fun , not for me but for anyone looking at me at traffic lights, think deer in headlights here folks ! I made one wrong turn ( to be fair , the road split into a y , I got hemmed in ). Recalculating , recalculating. Then not long after Jefferson summit or other , we hit another diversion, again no one actually working there. Recalculating , recalculating ( swear I am gonna hear that in my sleep now ) . Sat anv does its thing and off I go again, lo and behold before I know , I sees the hotel . Actually , I think I have sussed a new way to navigate.

Follow the airplanes that are coming in low, thats LAX , oor hotel is minutes from it, sussed it. Ok , maybe not , lol

So another day survived in LA, more freeway miles under my belt, more grey hair.

BTW , I saw stars ( in the sky ) last night, even saw Ursa major ( see , told ya I was an astronomer ! ) Also , there was a fantastic thin crescent Moon as I was driving back, awesome to observe ( at red lights , I hasten to add ) . She was low in the sky, has gone now , sadly. Anyways , whitered on as usual, so will give your reading eyes a rest , until tomorrow, lol. Be safe all.

    Clear Skies

    Pete

    Hey Pete,

You thought it was bad at 10:00 am! You should see it at 7:30 am!

(I used to go down to just about were you are pretty often. Avoid it like the plague now days!)

Sounds like the trip is going pretty well so far. Hang in there cooling off and the rain by the end to the week. If you think California drivers are nuts now just wait for the rain!

PS. You're still making my day!
