    Default Finished another project

It's not exactly astro related, but it is one more project off the list that put me closer to working on things for my scope.

This is a 6 channel audio amp, I designed it for a stereo set of speakers that are still on the project list. They are going to use active crossovers, so routing the highs, mids and lows will take place before the amplifier, and then each driver will get one amplifier channel. The thing weighs a bunch, though not nearly as much as my 200lbs sub amp.

The actual amplifiers are a pretty simple design based around a chip amp, I layed out the PCB and etched it in my wife's good pyrex. This project's been on the go for the last 5 years, I just didn't have the time to work on it while at university. It feels good to have it done.

Love the wood trim - that's 'beautiful'. Very nice looking layout and execution. Sizeable cooling! What 'class' type amplification? Now you know you cant just post that and not give a little more info SCR's or FET's in the finals? Watts per channel? Crossover assingment? Nice to see this, thanks for posting it ! ahhh I remember the days when....

Jim, they're class AB amplifiers based on the National Semi Overture series chips. The output stage is BJT. Each channel would individually do 100W into 4 ohms, though the power supply wouldn't be up the the task if each channel was outputting a straight sine wave at full power.

Crossover points haven't been decided yet, or even the topology. One of the reasons I'm going with active crossovers is that it lets me tweak values much easier and cheaper than if the crossovers are built into the speakers, aside from the other performance benefits. We'll see once the speakers are built and testing gets under way.

Looks neat, noteworthy body design, too. And in a cold winter night may double up as a hand warmer - here you have a tip on application in Astronomy.

Nice work, seriously - hope you enjoy the sound!

    Wow Dave awesome work!

I have been into electronics as well for the past 2-3 years, and have been gearing to start building an amp, speaker enclosures, and put some speakers together.

You really motivate me to start, great stuff! Let us know how they sound
