Default A little guitar help please

So this seems totally odd asking this question here (an astronomy forum), but I know there are alot of us here who play guitar.

Can anyone here help me with a strum pattern for "The Wreck of The Edmund Fitzgerald". Just can not seem to get it right.

    Thanks,

    Andrew.

    Hey Dark Canvas,

AWESOME TUNE! One of my faves!

    Strumming pattern is constant on this song...D U D U D U D...etc

    I play it like this:
    Std Tuning:

    B F#m
The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down

    A Em B
To the big lake they called Gitchee Gumee

And so on....The song never changes from this pattern. Keep the pick and strumming pattern going, don't stop.

Basically, for every chord change, (if you're strumming right) you should be landing on a downstroke. Kinda hard to explain in writing. If I have some time, maybe I'll post a YouTube video tomorrow for ya'.

I would say if you have a metronome, set it for around 51BPM, as I think the song is right around there for timing. I still use a metronome after 27yrs of playing, it always helps. Just keep strumming up & down, up & down, in a straightforward method, USING THE METRONOME, and you'll get the song down pretty well.

OK, looks like my chord changes didn't work on that reply...sorry....Let me try it again

The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they call Gitche Gumee

    Let's break it down:

    B
    "Legend".....

    F#m
    "Chippewa"....

    A
    "big"....

    Em
    "call"....

    B
    "Gumee"....

Thanks laney, I do not know what it is about the song but it seems to bugger me up with the strum pattern.

I am close and my wife thinks it sound ok, but there is something I know I am not getting right.

I will try your strum pattern as soon as I get a chance.

I will have to try those chords to see if it sounds better.

Right now I am using Asus2,Em,G,D, then back to Asus2 and a capo on the 2nd.

    Hey Andrew,

Yeah, I had heard that some folks use a capo on this song, but, I don't really think it's necessary to, UNLESS that's how Gordon did it in the original version. (Not sure, really) I guess either way is perfectly fine, but, I never used the capo for it. Maybe the tonal structure is different if you use the capo...??? That could very well be....

I am pretty sure that Gordon Lightfoot uses a capo on the 2nd, but I have seen it played alot of different ways and all sound good from alot of people.

My wife when she was young had a friend, her friend was the niece of Gordon Lightfoot.
My wife and her friend would go to their family camp. If Gordon was around and wanted some down time, he would go to the camp. So my wife spent seveal summers growing up having Gordon Lightfoot playing around a campfire. This would be sooo cool and my wife thinks it is "whatever".

Just a cool story I thought I would share.

LOL, that's an awesome story! Funny, most women I've been with, are not really crazy about music....Must be some kind of cruel cosmic joke or something.

Have not had a chance to try your strum pattern...been too busy at work, maybe on the weekend if I am not working.

Thanks Chris for your help. Now I know who to call on if I get stuck

Trying to teach myself so it is a longer road to hoe, and old dogs don't learn so fast.

    Hey! No problem!

BTW: I just found a nice video of a guy playing this song. Shows the strum pattern pretty good.

Now, upon doing some research today, I noticed that Gordon uses a 12-String guitar, but ALSO uses a CAPO on the 2nd fret. Either way is fine, but, this vid shows the playing pattern pretty well, thought you might wanna see it a little better. I think this guy also uses the CAPO on the 2nd fret. Sounds like the tonal structure sounds a bit better, as well.
