    Default Infrared Camera Project

Anyone have an old digital camera laying around? I did and I converted it into an infrared camera.

The CCD is the part of the camera which gathers the light for the image. It is sensitive to visible light as well as near infrared. However there is a filter blocking most of the infrared light from making it into your pictures. If you take the camera apart you may be able to remove that filter. After I had done this I put 3 Layers of very dark film negative in front of the ccd but behind the lens assembly. Then I put the camera back together. My camera now blocks most visible light and allows most near infrared light in (at least the wavelengths its sensitive to.) Here are a few pics. Plants seem to have an eerie glow this is called the Woods effect. In the picture where you can see the camera, I'm actually illuminating myself and it in a mirror with an remote control for a television, which uses an IR signal from a light. Feel free to ask questions or request more pics! Enjoy.

Not really, just seeing what the world looks like in near infrared light. Its something you can't really predict you have to just point shoot and look at the results. Something very interesting for the truly curious.

Now you just need to replace the flash with an IR LED one.

Since you used film negative, do you expect the filter to degrade over time?

I don't know really if it will degrade over time. but I could always just take the camera apart again and put in some new film negative. My parents have an enormous box of old pictures with the negatives mostly still with the sets they had developed.

As far as the flash that could be useful for indoor use or for night time. I would have to take the pictures fairly close up with no other light source though. The sun works great as an IR light source. When you take pictures while its sunny things are clear at any distance.

    Here's a couple more photos.

Quite interesting indeed! HMMMM have old 8800 laying around which needs some work, the zoom is jammed. May be interesting to mess around with. Very interesting and thank you for sharing!
