Default what is the star next to the moon right now in the sky?

The moon looks so clear and usually when it is - it has a star right next to it kind of diagonal. is that the same planet or star or does it vary?

In the Northern Hemisphere, Antares, the brightest star of Scorpius stood to the upper left of the Moon on June 16th this week and farther to its upper right on the 17th.

At the moment the Moon is very close to Jupiter in the sky. It passed Jupiter about 4 hours ago, so tonight Jupiter will appear on the right of the Moon, instead of the left (in the Northern Hemisphere). The Moon moves roughly half a constellation every night, so it's never close to any particular background object for more than a day or so.

You're probably talking about Jupiter (it doesn't twinkle), but you might be talking about Antaras in the constellation Scorpius (which does twinkle). It's a star that is 700 times the size of the sun.

But, since Jupiter is so large, close and bright, that's probably what you're talking about.

Yep - definitely Jupiter
Very bright, to the right of the Moon, at the time that first post was made.
