Smile My first try at Lunar mosaics

    Hi All,

A bit bored tonight so I decided to try to see if I could make some mosaics from the lunar shots I have. This is from June 18th
    http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4120/...852888a5_b.jpg

This is from 20th June 10
    http://farm5.static.flickr.com/4138/...905d17d2_b.jpg

Both of these have been processed using ICE from shots taken with Canon ESO 550D, EP projection with hyperion zoom and my 8"dob.

Next project will be a mosaic of the whole moon!

    Default Cool!

    Hi Carol,
That is some really nice work, I've never done a lunar mosaic...so how did you start? Is it a difficult process? I have been wanting to try this for some time but have not really done any home work on the subject yet. Thanks for sharing, it's really motivational stuff.

    Thanks Brian,

Earlier tonight I came across a Lunar Mosaic on another forum which was processed using ICE. After a wee but of googling I downloaded the programme and gave it a try. It was really easy, I picked the shots I wanted to stitch together loaded them into the programme and it did the rest! Exported it as a jpeg file and did a little bit of brightness and contrast tweeking with a bit of unsharp mask and that was it! Next time I'm out with the camera I'll take some shots specifically for a mosaic. I think the important thing is to have a bit of over lap. I think it will get more tricky when trying to stitch together a few more shots. My next challenge will be to do a mosaic of the full or almost full moon.

It would be great if you gave it a try Brian. I'm sure you've already got some shots you could use.

Here ya go Declan , ICE

Its a great easy wee prog' used it a few times . Can be used on Panorama's as well mate .

Carol , nicely done there. Well sussed on the overlap as well. You can get some really nice big Moons if you have good magnification and a fair few images ( seen a 90 odd frame one ! )

    Hi Pete,

Wow, 90 frames! That file must be huge!
I was thinking about how I'd get the shots for a full moon mosaic. I'd start in the middle with two (or four) overlaping shots to catch the centre and then work out in a circle, then a second circle if needed.
I'm interested to know how you take your shots for a mosaic?

I start at the limb Carol , mentally noting what is in FOV , I then move the camera ( mounted on the EQ6 ) with the handset up slightly, trying to keep same amount of 'black' ( space ) at the edge . Slowly work around the whole outer area , then I start to work my way in to the middle. Exposure tends to change slightly , so I adjust if needed ( know your camera controls well ! ) . Take loads of raw images ( to account for seeing ) so you have plenty to work with.

This was a nine pane mosaic ...Nine Pane mosaic.

I have to say , IMHO, that Full Moons don't make great subjects. Now , if you shoot at a phased Moon , they are superb.

    Clear Skies
