Outstanding shots, Brian. And an excellent report. I have a new-found respect for a 4".

But, I think it was the skill of the observer, namely you, that deserves the credit. It's not so much the tool being used as it is the one who is using it! And you use it with extraordinary expertise yielding remarkable results!

    Thanks for posting.

(North & South being the wrong way round still dis-orientates me!) You've caught some beautiful shots here Brian and it sure looks like you had an amazing night.

I'm glad to hear you took a step back and re-connected with what you enjoy about this hobby. Sometimes you just gotta go with the flow and see where it takes you! lol (Another cliche, sorry!)

I had to chuckle when I read that there's a crater called Hell, after some googling I found out where it got it's name!

I'm intrigued by your plans for a "special piece on Copernicus" and await your next post with interest. It's a pleasure to be among the congenial company you've chosen to share your work with.

    Best wishes

    Carol
I am glad you enjoyed the piece, I just felt like I needed to lay my thoughts out. It is too easy to get absorbed in the techno-coolness and forget what a joy it can be to do things more simply. The sightseeing on Jupiter and the Moon were a genuine tonic that morning and I am resolved to set my camera aside more often to enjoy some uncomplicated observing. Not that I'll stop imaging mind...just lighten up occasionally I'm glad you cracked the Virtual Moon Atlas, it's a wonderful tool. Did my directions in the text help at all or were they too confusing? Another great resource available online and one I consider absolutely indispensable (and it's free!) is Alan Chu's Moonbook 3v4.pdf, just Google it and you will find it out there. If you have any problems drop me a line and I will get you a web address. With any luck I should have the Copernicus piece out in a day or two, I'll look forward to hearing what you think. Very Best Regards always, and thanks again for visiting with me.

    Hi Brian,

The Moon Atlas is fabulous! Love it! I have figured out how to set it to a specific date and time, so I set it for the early hours of 4th July. Seeing the line of the terminator in approx the same place as in your photographs meant I was able to follow your tour along the terminator no problem. I always learn from reading your explainations and am glad you take the time to write them. I'll check out Moonbook tomorrow. If I can't find it , I'll let you know!

It's a great idea to leave all the technology at home once in a while and just enjoy what the skies have to offer. I owe myself a night like that as I too have got a wee bit wrapped up in imaging recently.

Looking forward to the next installment.

    Clear skies

    Carol
