Default DS mounting arm assemblies. For a DIY project.

I am thinking about buying a Meade DS-2080AT GoTo Telescope. For a cheap pan head to do time lape photography. When doing research on the DS-2000 series. I have noticed that some of the mounting arm assemblies. Are at a slightly different angle from one another. I do not know if this is because of the promotional photos or that they really are different from each other. Seems strange that the same family or series would have many differences. However thats how it looks. If someone has two telescopes from the DS-2000 series. Can you check them out for me and tell me if the mounting arm assemblies are different from one another, or is it the angle of the promotional pictures on vendor websites. Also can anyone give me an idea on the weight capacity of the mounting arm assemblies. I am going to have to mount the camera with a counter weight and would not want to crack/stess the assembly. Any other suggesions would be helpful as well for a slow pan head. However I have not been able to find any within my 200-250 dollar budget.

    I run a DS mount,
There is an old version & a newer version but on the outside other then the newer version having a silver plastic cover on its outer half all is the same. You can buy this mount with a camera setup attached to the mounts arm on Ebay.

    Hi StateCensor and welcome.

Like you I have been looking at Meades DS range , for exactly the same reason ( I blame Tom Lowe !!!! ) .

Anyhoo , I ended up pulling the trigger on a EQ5 Goto. Seemd to make more sense and I wanted better pointing accuracy ( up to 1 arc minute ) . I think it made more sense ( for me ) to go that route.

Would love to see your results when you get some .

    Hi Pete,
You made an excellent choice there. Im pretty sure most of the "play" problems in the arm will be solved by the new one, Ill post back when ive had a chance to run it a bit with the 497 hand controller.
Id considered a CG-5 like yours but figured ive gone so far with this month, wood legs, etc...might as well try the new arm for $80 as a last measure before plopping down $500 or more just yet as id still need a dovetail bar & a set of rings also.

Cheers Dave, actually I am in a win win situation . I was given a Meade 2000 series mount / scope . Scope was knackered but mount , with a bit of TLC , might be usuable , its a bit sticky in Dec. Its the , IIRC , the Autostar 494 model HC . Its simply amazing some of the TL sequences that have been done with the DS alt-az mount.

Got a few ideas for some TL shooting around Scotland over time.
