    Default Meade LNT smartfinder

    Hi,

I have recentlly bought a LT-8 ACF telescope with Audiostar controller. I am very pleased with the portability and the optics. I added anti-vibration pads and for me they really make a difference on focusing.
Can anyone tell me please if I can install a Meade LNT Telescope Smart Finder https://www.ebay.com/itm/Meade-LNT-T...QAAOSwRhVbirbm ?

    Thanks,
    Cezar

I have just tested the LNT smartfinder module with my LT-8 and I can confirm that it is working flowlessly. I have permanently glued the LNT on the telescope. In the Audiostar I can set the red dot blink, I can do the auto alignment and the sensor calibration. I am very happy that it is working. Also, because I have added the StarGPS module with StarPatch update, the time provided by LNT is ignored and the gps time it is used instead.

I am surprised to hear this because if I am not mistaken your AudioStar uses the LNT unit to obtain a magnetic north reading. I have tried to do a two star alignment using magnetic north from my location with poor results. It appears to that the magnetic declination data of the AudioStar is very outdated and what confuses it even more is that in South Africa the magnetic declination can very from -15 to -28 degrees from one part of the country to a another. At my location I have measured the AudioStar's declination compensation at about -16 degrees which is 6 degrees out. I think in some parts of the world using magnetic north with the AudioStar can give satisfactory results if the magnetic declination at that location is small and the AudioStar's compensation is adequate.

I have run the Calibration sensors from Audiostar. The last process was to center to Polaris. The offset values between True and Magnetic North, I believe, are included in the software. After the calibration, auto alignment worked ok. I do not know how it will calibrate in south hemisphere.

So it appears that sensor calibration is like drive training and the offsets are then saved in memory and used the next time. Its a pity one cannot do magnetic declination training.

PS : maybe the offset is saved : I am going to use magnetic north a few times and see if its accuracy improves.
