Default DS 2114 ATS Alignment Issues

Last weekend I purchased a DS2114 off of Craigslist from a couple who had bought it brand new but never opened it for $150. They said they had a manual scope and this thing intimidated them when they started reading up on how to operate it. I have no idea how old this thing is, but while opening it I could see that in fact it was never opened. Started it up and wouldn't hold the time. I happened to have some of the correct batteries for the LNT since that size also fits our car remotes. The battery door is on the outside of the unit. Did a reset and put all of the info in again. Issues. The LNT seem to detect level very accurately. North, not so much. About 10 or so degrees off. I tried the sensor setting procedure, which is just leveling then traversing to Polaris, centering, and hitting Enter? After shutting it off and trying easy alignment, North is still a ways off. Maybe I missed something? The manual isn't exactly clear on how to do the procedure. While traversing to an alignment star, the telescope will slew up until the tube hits the mount if it thinks the star is up there. I checked the maximum elevation and it's set at 70 degrees, but the control blows right past it. I've put in my location as a zip code, nearest city in the list, and then as latitude and longitude. Even after setting the sensors, when it tries to find an alignment star, it's not a little ways off, it's sometimes 20 degrees off or more in both axis. Has this thing maybe lost some of the program or something? I just bought the 506 cable for it so I would be able to update it, but I didn't realize that I would also need a $40 USB adapter from Meade. Ordering the adapter from Amazon tonight. Am I missing something during the alignment? Does the mount need to have the azimuth on zero when pointing north? I am new to this, so if I'm doing something stupid, or completely missing something, that would be great.....if I can get this thing working.

I don't have any experience with the Meade LNT unit : my LX90 only has a GPS unit. I think the reason that Meade stopped using LNT units is because at best they a compromise. a magnetic compass is never completely accurate, and I have tried all types including electronic ones. There is just too much stuff that can offset it like any metal object, rocks in the ground that is magnetic ect. The fist thing to do is to check if there is any updates available for the AutoStar 494. You don't need to get a Meade USB adaptor a no name unit will also work. I use a home made cable and no name adaptor without any problems. Again I have not used a 494 because mine is a 497 but I am sure you should also be able to calibrate and train your drive. From my experience with the Meade goto system I can say that for trouble free star hopping you must get your ducks in a row : The right firmware, calibrate and train drives and a level tripod. Attach a bubble level on your OTA and make sure that it's not just level facing north in the home position but in all directions. Don't worry if your north reading is not completely spot on because that would be corrected with the first aliment star sync.
    Good luck!

I see that the drive training procedure is "appropriately" on page 13 of the manual

It looks like a the firmware on the 494 is not upgradeable, according to info on Mike Weasner's site : Weasner's Meade Autostar Information

Are the date, time and timezone, including daylight saving time correctly entered? Any error there will produce a large error in targeted slews.

Go into the Utilities menu, "reset" the telescope and start over again. I had some issues develop with my ETX and discovered there are two time settings. The one set during alignment was not sync'd with the other. There was a 5 hour difference and it caused the scope to be very far off the mark. Reset should get everything back to square one.

I have had a few Meade scopes with the LNT module and have not found one to be accurate yet.

The first thing I would do is a "Factory Reset" in the hand control.

Make absolutely certain that all of your information is entered correctly (location, time, date) and skip the automatic alignment. The scope will need to start from it's home position (tube level and pointing north). You will need a decent bubble level (I would use one at least 10-12" long). Use the hand control to put the scope on Polaris. Once centered, lower the scope (no right or left) until it is level and you are ACCURATELY at your home position.

Now start the two star manual alignment, you will need to know the location of the alignment stars. They should be between 30 and 60 degrees in elevation at least 60 degrees apart and preferably one in the east and one in the west. This has worked very well for me.
