Angry Meade LS 8 Dead in the Water

Hi everyone and my apologies if this has been covered somewhere in Part 1 or Part 2 of the Meade LS 8 forum.

I bought the telescope in October 2010 and after a few times using it, there was a glitch in starting. After some time trying to figure this out and consulting the place where I purchased it, I was advised to update the controller software, no mean feat given the Mini SD card and efforts to find this, which makes one wonder why Meade would use this rather than a more standard type card. Anyway, after updating it worked and had a pretty good summer of 2011 using it.

Most recently this winter on a clear night, I took it out and flipped the switch. It beeped once, the switch on the telescope glowed red and steady, but the telescope did nothing, the Autostar III controller did not indicate anything on the display, but the two lights at the top of the unit glowed steady and that's it.

I tried the SD card load, thinking somehow there was a problem with the firmware, but installing the card and flipping the switch produced the same issue.

Extremely frustrating and kicking myself given my prior negative experience with Meade telescopes.

    Any help would be appreciated.

Take out the battery/power cable. Wait of a few hours.

After that reconnect with new batteries and try again.

You are running this scope on a separate 12 volt power pack? and not the internal batteries?

Im sorry for your experience. I currently own a perfect (knock on wood) LX200 10 f6.3 Classic, im the second owner. The other scope I owned was an ETX-125EC, that was great, until the RA motor crapped out, then it wasnt worth fixing. I deforked it, and sold the OTA.

Meade has taked a lot of bad raps recently, and deservedly so. The ETX is a good scope with a crap mount. The LS series have great optics, but the technology fails often, and kills the fun. Lets not even talk about the big RCX disaters...

They have really tried to make good on their problems, especially with the first light program...if it breaks in a year, they ship you a new one, basically no questions asked.

Celestron isnt immune either....great optics, but their bread and butter mount, the CGEM has a HORRIBLE reputation....

I like to buy used, test it first, if it works, rock and roll.

Sorry for the rant, and sorry for your LS problems. Remember, the squeaky wheel gets the grease. Press Meade hard, tell them you are active on the astro-forums, and that you will fully document your issues...not a threat, a promise.

    Thank you ReuelT.

I have just disconnected the power cord and taken the batteries out and will try this. Not too hopefull though, as I did this when it first happened and nothing, but will try.

    Hi Joe,

Thank you for the response. I have run the scope on a separate 12 volt power pack and also run using a AC connector but when I do this, I have left the batteries installed, as well.

I have taken the batteries and power cord out to try what ReuelT has recommended but am not too optimistic.

    Andy,

Good advice. I just hate dealing with Meade, but maybe their customer service had improved since the last time. Looking at a dead in the water scope is like burning money. One good point is I've found this forum and assuming I can get this thing working again, will advance my more or less beginner interest in astronomy and astrophotography.

Sorry to hear about your problems. In addition to the great suggestions above, have you inspected the cable that goes from the hand controller to the LS? I would, ensuring the cables to the Rj11 connectors do not show any issues and the all look terminated correctly.

    Hi John,

Thank you for your reply. I have inspected the RJ11 cable connectors and they look fine. I have connected and re-connected them and no change.

I did phone Meade and they suggested the firmware fix once more. I had tried that over the weekend (my son has the scope in Lindsay, ON and I am in Burlington) but no change after I had loaded the card into the slot. They asked if I had uninstalled the old updater software and had loaded the new updater software, and suggested I do this and reinstall, so I will give that a shot again to see if there is any change.

Just wanted to follow-up that I had tried this and still the same issue. No change. I will try again a firm update suggested by Meade this weekend and see if there is any change.
