Well I received my telescope back yesterday and naturally it snowed, hasn't really snowed since December, and cloudy skies are forcast for the rest of the week. It worked in the living room, but I will have to wait to see if they really 'fixed' the problem. I have attached their repair report, but it doesn't say much. They adjusted the focuser, which was not a problem, and the declination motor spring, what every that is. Interesting that I though the problem was with the azimuth (R.A.) drive based on using the Landmark function. I just hope that they 'fixed' the problem.

Bummer about the weather...and I agree, the report is scant at best.

I called Meade Service yesterday and had to run through the troubleshooting guide with the tech (Carlos). He finally gave me an RGA number to ship it back. Oddly, Meade doesn't cover the shipping from my end, but the tech mentioned some extended warranty (wasn't offered from the online merchant) that would cover all shipping and repairs for 3 years. I was skeptical to purchase but he did mention that the one-time shipping costs for a large scope would almost cover the warranty cost. I crumbled and bought it. Carlos made the process super easy; he immediately emailed the UPS shipping label to me, so all I had to do was print the label and tape it on the box.

Hopefully the repairs go that well. Better news later, I hope.

    Dougscope,

I received my scope from Meade in pristine condition in about 3.5 weeks from the shipping date. The handwritten service order merely stated, "the reported failure was..[scribble]...due to the RA encoder damaged."

Meade replaced the "Dec Encoder" and the "RA Encoder" with appropriate adjustments to each encoder and gear assembly.

First night out I held my breath while slewing to Jupiter (slewing 40-50 degrees off target prior to repair)...the scope locked directly on target! I chose objects further and further out and each time the desired target was well within the FOV of the 26mm eyepiece. I've taken it out numerous times in the last couple of months and each time the scope has performed as expected for the amount of money invested in this instrument. I locked in on Saturn the other night and the kids were amazed...an awesome experience.

The extended warranty was well worth the money for ease of shipping, and Meade performed the repairs in a reasonable amount of time.

I hope your experience with shipping/repair goes as well as my experience with customer service.

Good luck and let me know how it turns out.

    Matt

I just got back from a 7 month deployment and decided it was time to get the LS-8 out of its box and under the stars. I have had no problems with the alignment or GPS in the past. I updated the firmware successfully. Last night I could not automatically align. The camera would get stuck on "processing image". After manually aligning to 2 stars, the scope would be about 15 degrees off when using "go to". I decided to just manually target some star clusters and take some pics with my DSLR attached. The scope decides on its own to start driving straight up! I had to shut it off before the camera hit. Finally when shutting down the scope it decides to drive itself up and off center telling me to power off now. I had to manually drive it to park and just kill the switch.

I used the USB cable to update the firmware, I will try the SD card method today to see if it helps.

Hi, Philosocrates! Two possible causes for your align issues are...
    1. The scope time is off an hour due to the daylight savings time / time zone being wrong. You can select the correct time zone under preferences.
You can check that the scope has the right time by scrolling through the scope info on the Autostar. This is likely if you haven't used it since the clocks changed.
    2. Your magnetic north determination can be off due to interference from buried metal, vehicles, etc. Meade doesn't let us override a bad fix. I've stood behind my scope and seen it slew way off Polaris. In that case, you have to hope that the align star is still in the vicinity of the Eclips camera,
or set up in a different spot and try again.

Finally, you can always manually center a known object, select it in the Autostar, and "Press Enter to Sync" to it. It will track it from then on.

    Good luck!

Where can I download the latest firmware? I used the LS 8" for about 2 hours last night, and in the last 30 minutes or so the keypad kept reading "Power lost, saving state" but the manual slewing continued to work, and the scope never shut down. I'm using a car jumper box to power the scope.

I should also add that the power failure occurred while I was using the High-Precision slewing option.
