    Default Craiglist find, good deal? Meade Saturn DS114EC



    starting to get into astronomy as a hobby. I found this scope on craigslist and managed to get it for 140$.

    is this good for a beginner? should i not bother?

    It's an Alt/Az mount telescope, which will be a bit more simple to set up than the equatorial mount version. Assuming the motors still work, it should be good to get your feet wet. The 4.5 inch aperture will let you see the moon, planets, and some of the brighter DSO's. If you're the DIY type, there are a few things you can do to the scope to improve its performance. The telescope probably isn't worth putting the extra money and time into it from a strictly financial perspective, but the learning experience you'll get from making the modifications will be invaluable.

    I bought a similar scope about two weeks ago on craigslist and I am very pleased.

    I paid $75 for a Meade model DS-114ATA.
