Default Viewfinder w/ camera for remote observation on LX200

    Hi,

I have an LX200-ACF that I'm currently using for remote observation (inside a RoboDome)... right now it's in my back yard for testing/getting familiar with, but I'm looking to put it in a more remote location soon, and one problem I have is the ability to do an alignment remotely.

I've currently attached a small webcam to the stock 8x50 viewfinder, but I find that when the scope is completely lost, I do a fresh Auto Alignment (with GPS, tilt, north, etc sensors), it ends up pointing where the alignment star isn't in the viewfinder (I think it's pointing to magnetic north rather than true north, which is ~12 degrees different here). I can find it manually standing by the scope, but of course in a remote location, that won't be possible. The webcam is also not the ideal camera, so I'd like to go with a real camera meant for this.

So, my question is... can anyone recommend a good camera/viewfinder for this? I'd like a larger field of view, as well as better camera control (like exposure times). One thing I've been considering is just mounting a DMK 21AU04.AS (sorry, can't paste a link since I'm new) directly on the tube with a C mount lens. I'm no expert at this though, so I'm open to suggestions, or confirmation that this would be a good solution.

Image quality isn't a factor, I just need to be able to see the bright star that it's supposed to be pointing at, and get it centered well enough that I can center it properly on the main camera.

BTW, sorry if this is in the wrong forum... I figured the LX200 forum would be most appropriate, but if it should go in the imaging forum, please move it.

    Thanks,
    Pat

Anyone have any ideas about this? Or can anyone recommend a viewfinder with a wider FOV and a mount that I can mount any standard camera to?

    Thanks,
    Pat

Consider using something like the Orion ST80 and a web-cam.

The ST80 is often used as a guide-scope, makes a decent finder, and could serve dual purposes if used with a web-cam and something like PHD Guider.

This would give you a wide/rich-field finder, a camera, as well as guiding capability if you decide to image.

Thanks for the input... I'll see if I can pick one of them up. I haven't been too impressed with webcams though... I'm currently using one on my viewfinder and I find it hard to see even the bright stars. I guess it's just a HUGE difference between the webcam and the SBIG camera on the telescope .

I'll probably order one of the DMK 21AU04.AS cameras to play with (unless someone knows a better comparable camera)... I think the small size will work well for a viewfinder, it has adjustable exposure time, it says it works with Maxim DL, and the sample images look pretty nice. I'll see if I can adapt it to work on the ST80, and maybe order some cheap C mount lenses, and see what works better for me. I see in the sample images that someone mounted one of those cameras to their main tube with just a lens (unfortunately, there's no details on it, and the site it links to is down).

    Thanks,
    Pat
