Default LX200GPS was gifted to me, now what?

    Good Morning,

I'm new to this hobby, real new. Last weekend I was given a Meade LX200GPS, a tripod and two briefcases which contain I don't know what. I've always had an interest in Astronomy; however, didn't have the cash to buy a telescope. The tripod was left outside and was rusted. I removed the rust on the legs, applied wax and cleaned up the rest of the tripod. It' looks good. I noticed the is a bezel and compass which are mounted to the top of the tripod have come off. I have to re-glue to these to the tripod?

The telescope itself looks to be in very good condition and it came is a very nice padded case.

Forum, here's my questions: Since I have no knowledge relating to the telescope or its associated hardware could anyone provide some links that will help me setup the telescope and determine what I need or may already have and how to configure it? Is there a specific protocol I should use to verify everything functions properly? I'm apprehensive that I may damage something while trying to verify the hardware functions correctly? Should this be a concern?

If this is posted in the wrong thread, please relocate it to the proper one.

    Thanks

    Chuck

    Congrats on a great score!
I would do a google search based on whatever numbers from the scope you can find.
All manuals for these are online and can help you out step by step. https://www.meade.com/support/downloads/

Good Luck and please post up some pictures if you can.

    Hi,

So, in answer to your "now what" -- learn how to set it up then use it to your utmost enjoyment!

    Cheers,
    JT

Also, there are several astro clubs in the greater LA area. Go online and see if any of them are close by. Their members can provide you with a wealth of first-hand knowledge. jt

I use A 10 inch LX200 system. I recommend that you get a yahoo email account and then join the X200GPS Yahoo group. There are years and yaers of knowledge base there plus many support files. In addition download hte LX200GPS user manual from Meade and print it out.

Well we have something in common! A dear friend recently gave one to me also! Mine is a 10" LX200 GPS. My advice is download the manual if you don't already have the printed one and read through it. Pay attention to the instructions on using the automatic focuser and the mirror lock. The manual coarse adjustments should be made with the mirror in the unlock position. Then you can lock it and use the controller to do the micro-focusing. I'm sure we will both have many years of learning how to make the most of this scope! But the best part is how user friendly it is to set up and align. It pretty much does it all by itself!
