Creating an atmosphere on Mars?

I understand the principals of creating an atmopsphere on Mars, and the time involved in doing so. But doesn't Mars have a solid core? Thus no magnetic field, which would be required to keep the solar winds from "blowing" the atmosphere right off the planet again. I keep seeing shows on Discovery and other science channels about the possibilities of putting an atmosphere on Mars (eventually). And out of all the scientists I've seen them interview none of them mentioned needing a magnetic field. I just find it hard to believe that so many astronomer's would over look something so basic. So what am I missing here?

well the down side on living on mars is the days last longer and also we have to add new month or exstend our days in the monthly calender
