Default erratic slews in RA with my iOptron 30

My procedure is to set the zero position and then to do an alignment. I am only using the hand pad. Sometimes on the first, but it can be the third or fourth slew the mount will try to slew into the mount. It seems to get lost in RA. For example, my alignment star is Cappella then I try to slew to M36, and it will take off to counterweight up. The problem is inconsistent but frequent. I do have an RS232 cable plugged in, and at first, this was happening using several planetarium programs, but I shut the programs down, and it does the same thing using just the hand pad

How can I troubleshoot what the issue is?

Check that your settings are correct. The most common cause of this kind of problems is incorrect timezone settings or incorrect geographical position.

The GPS should have set the latitude and longitude, as well as the time information correctly. But there were problems with a GPS date rollover earlier this month. So if this is a new problem, check that the data got set correctly. You might need a firmware upgrade to fix the GPS issue, if that is it.

I think you are on to something, tonight I checked the setting, and sure enough, there was a problem. So I waited out GPS till it indicated OK and then things looked right. The routine went fine tonight with no weirdness. So thanks!

Also, be advised that the iOptron mounts require the OTA to be precisely balanced. You will experience issues if you are even slight to moderately unbalanced.
