Default Telescope Pier Complete. The pad is next up.

I hope (weather and the Universe not withstanding) to pour the pad for my ROR Obs next week.
Its not going to be very big, only 8x8.

Looks great! I just finished my pier up a couple weeks ago. How did you finish the top of the pier so smoothly? On mine, the top was rather wavy after pushing in the jbolts, and the sonotube was in the way so I couldn't smooth it out very well. I ended up leveling it after the concrete cured with some concrete patching compound, but it still doesn't look as pretty as yours! Also, what kind of paint did you use?

Are you going to put some kind of isolation or expansion joint around the base of the pier so that you keep it mechanically isolated from your pad? I built a deck and made sure none of it was touching the pier... but with concrete, it would take a bit more planning. I am sure you are already accounting for it, but just curious the method you will use?

Are you going to build a structure on the 8x8 pad, or what is the final vision for the project?

Very nice! Can't wait to see more progress and finished pictures once it's complete.

    Hello.

I used a plywood jig to insert the bolts into the cement. Once they were inserted I used a dead-blow hammer and gave the plywood jig a few good raps to ensure the cement was nicely settled around the bolts. The bonus is that it caused the cement to level off nicely at the top of the tube.
As for the paint, it is just tinted concrete paint. When I saw the name of the color I just knew I had to have it. The color is called "Deep Galaxy".... ya I know. (before I painted it I used an angle grinder on it to champ-fer the top edge and remove any rough spots) If you drop by my album you can see all the photos of the process.
The pier will be separate from the floor, but the long term plan is to operate the equipment from my basement office, so vibrations to the pier would be minimal anyway. (Corning will soon be selling an optical USB cable that will work at a distance of over 30 meters)
The structure will be a roll off roof observatory. I hate dragging the equipment up from the basement everytime I want to do any observing or astrophotography. It takes an hour and a half to get it setup, and then tear it down at the end of the night. And you know what that means... It means I don't get much use out of my equipment. I haven't had my scope out in months. I hope to change that once its safely ensconced in its own little Observatory.

Your pier looks great !!! Contratulations. An observatory makes a huge difference in your viewing, because it's so much easier to get going.

I am using a powered 60' USB cable with a hub at the other end. It works well for controlling the mount, guide camera, and DSLR. I was worried it wouldn't handle it but no problems so far. Still an optical cable sounds great.

Thanks for sharing. I used to be proud of how nice my pier turned out . Exceptional craftsmanship on yours!
