I was wondering if it's possible to take astrophotography with an Orion SkyQuest XT12g (New GoTo Dobsonians), since it has the ability to track the object and keep it on focus. If so, what would be the ideal equipment to get.

Dobsonians aren't really cut out for astrophotography, although I suppose you could try it. Nothing beats an astrograph/refractor on an EQ mount for AP, though.

Old thread but...you certainly can adapt your dob to do some AP. All you need is to add an equatorial platform. Looks like this:


They simulate an EQ mount movement. The only downside to these platforms is you can't track for 5 hours. You need to reset them every so often. Still...Dob+platform beats any other combination for $/inch of aperture.
