    Well, I don't have a 5D but I have a 1000D. I'm sure there are some similarities, hopefully I will learn something!

Chris, I read some folks mod'd their canon cameras. Did you have to do anything like that?

My wife uses the camera to take some amazing Sunrise/sunset pictures, so I hesitate to mod it until she has her own. Maybe I'll get myself a 5D and she can use the XS!

I heard of the mod-ing several times but couldn't grasp the technical intricacies involved. Any idea what they do? I'll be curious if there are good articles on it or not.

I once watched a youtube video on modding the 1000D, you are basically removing the IR filter from in front of the chip. It involves tiny little screws and tiny little ribbon cables. You are working around the exposed chip and one slip or misstep and you have a paperweight. I decided to leave it to the experts when the time comes. Gary Honus and Hap Griffon both do the mods for around $200.

I found the video, Gary Honus is doing the work. Interesting, but very scary! (To me anyway) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-IIN0-q2WLY

His videos are cool. It sounds like if you remove the IR filter then we should see more objects in the sky.

True. If I remember right, objects like the Orion nebula show their true colors and more nebulosity.

Just letting you know I now have a Canon 5D Mark II so now it's official!! Loving the camera so far, just have to wait until the weather clears to do some wide field. Also just rceived a Canon 70 - 200mm f 2.8L USM lens to go with the new camera, should be a nice combo!
