Hi all, being a total newbie I went on to a site called Tools : The sky over Perth. It gives me a Chart of what's in the sky.I sit outside with my laptop and compass to get North, look up, look at the screen and drew a quick picture of everything that I was interested in trying to view. This was last night, set up waiting eagerly to try and view Saturn when it got a bit higher. Then the cloud rolled in!

One of my astronomy clubs had Peter Birren as a speaker earlier this month. He has created a wonderful book called "Objects in the Heavens". "The complete MAG-10 Northern Deep-Sky viewing list and fieldbook". He has lists of of the Messier catalog, NGC catalog and Common names and what constellation they are in. He also has things like 7 pages of things to view on the Moon and lots of other useful tidbits. It is very well done and for visual, it is great. On the down side, it is only the northern hemisphere. It is not a star atlas, but a nice supplement to one. Yes I bought one. A word of warning, he indicated that Amazon and a few other retailers are selling old, old versions as far back as version 4. His current one is version 5.2 and he even made a couple of small hand written corrections to it. It's not free, but it was well worth the price.

Ok, just because this thread helped me out so much I'll say that I had the Deep Sky Hunter atlas in the below link that I got off of this thread printed out for me on A3 sized heavy paper and it is amazingly detailed. I have smaller charts that I use at the scope but for planning an eveining or really learning a star field this thing is awesome! But it may be a bit of information overload for some. Anyways, here it is. It's very well detailed. Printable Deep Sky Atlases - Deep Sky Watch

New to the site and found this thread while exploring. I appreciate the notes on charts. I can tell I am going to put my printer into overload!
