Andrew Cockburn's "The Threat" was a well drafted book about the measures and countermeasures from the cold war - The tank was a well documented fiasco about I've got a better one than you. America ended up with a worse tank than they started with because the Russians weren't able to produce a better tank, just better propoganda.

The best series for that kind of thing was Channel 4's 'The Nuclear Age' a really amazing documentary series back in the 80s that covered the constant one upmanship of the cold war and the lunacy of the military industrial complexes of both countries.

Sadly its not available anymore which is sad because it was a terrific bit of history documentary making.

ps you mean to say the M1 isn't the best tank in the world ? JUst as well us brits stuck with our tried and tested old banger the Challenger I guess Personally I think we could have done a good deal on a lot full of surplus Russian T-90s myself - they were banging them out at bargain prices and us brits could have saved a ton by buying them slightly used very cheap
Thirty spokes meet at the nave, because of the hole we may use the wheel.
A cup is moulded from clay, because of the hollow we may use the cup.
Four walls surround a hearth, because of the doors we may use the house.
Thus tools come from what exists, but use from what does not.

    Wait a second now.

Everyone knows you're supposed to smile and just say "Yes." to these kinds of questions! Followed by a "Don't make me prove it..." in some cases.

No Star Wars, but we do have the Boeing Airborne Lasers. We probably wanted the USSR to believe we had Star Wars to drive them further into debt.
