Default Using Star Maps

I have had a lot of trouble figuring out how to use a star map and I need somebody to explain it to me. I would really appreciate it.

Http://www.heavens-above.com/skychar...=1&BW=0&SZ=600 here's a good one. You might have to sign up, but they won't do anything. But it's really good. It has the constellations outlined and everything for ya. And It has the N, S, E, and W symbols. And it has the planets, too. Check it out!

If you are using a star-finder (planisphere, star wheel,) you put the current hour on the inner wheel next to the current date on the outer wheel, and hold it over your head with the outer rim in the window pointing south. Now, the constellations on the map correspond to what is up in the sky above you.

Generally, star maps are designed to be used when held overhead. If you put the map down on the table with the top pointing north, the stars on the left of the map will be on the right in the sky. You can still use it this way, but be aware of what is happening. The ones in the magazines are printed this way, too.

Yeah I figured out the planisphere but the map was one that I got in a kit that was not customized or anything.

Google "Cartes du ciel 3.0" and download the free software. This is a wonderful planetarium program that you you can use at your own latitude and longitude to get all kinds of views of the night sky.
You can turn the constellations on and off, zoom in on sections of the sky, rotate, etc.
It takes a little getting used to, but it's got tremendous controls and many features.
AND IT'S FREE!!
