Default Got it! Finally Finished the Herschel 400.

So, after waiting for weeks for the perfect combination of clear skies and no moon, I was able to finish off the final dozen objects in the Herschel 400 List last night, which I started a couple of years ago. I viewed over 90 percent of the objects with my 4-inch refractor (ES AR102), and likely could have seen all of them with that scope. The rest were picked off with the 8-inch SCT. I could get away with only needing the 4-inch due to the pretty dark (Bortle 3 on the best nights) skies from my very rural backyard. That's a good thing around here, because I seldom take the 8-inch out in winter due to the LONG cool down times required in low temps (typically in the single digits or below zero F). The refractor is great for quick viewing sessions and needs no cool-down time.

One of the bigger challenges was viewing the 24 objects that are never more than 15 degrees above my southern horizon. Not only did those observations require excellent transparency, but they also had to coincide with no moonlight and a short viewing window.

The downside of getting caught up in a viewing project like this, though, is that you don't tend to view most objects at length, but rather just check them off the list. For me it was just a bucket-list thing. The H400 should not be considered a "best of" set of objects, but rather, a nice sampling of DSOs visible with typical amateur telescopes from most of the northern hemisphere. It was a nice incentive to check out parts of the sky that I never bothered with, as well.

So, what's next? I think I'm gonna spend a lot of time checking out galaxy pairs and groups (like Arp objects), and slowly check off H2 and H3 objects as I get to them.

Congrats Gordon. I got to about 360 but I'm afraid the remaining 40 are almost undoable from my observing site. Some LP, trees in the way of the horizon and so on. I had kind of the same problem with the Messier 110 but persevered until I got all of them - M77 eluded me for a long time and was my last object. I celebrated with a cigar and some port. Certainly a similar celebration is in order for you with your achievement.

Congratulations, Gordon! I've been working on the H400 since 2002 and I'm only halfway there. I can only do the remainder of the objects from darker skies than what I have now.

Congratulations Gordon on this great achievement! My experience matching yours: I was pleasantly surprised to be able to pick H400-1 targets with 4" refractor under Bortle 3-4 skies. Although, most of them I observed with 8" SCT due to Bortle 6 home location.

Most of H2 and H3 galaxies are tougher, so I would not even bother from home.
