    Default Does anyone just "look"

Obviously not as interesting a topic as one where people post images but, does anyone actually just "LOOK" through their scope these days, and I do not mean in between imaging

Oh yeah! I am all over the night sky. I often wonder if it a lack of discipline on my part, or perhaps a panic to catch up for not paying more attention in my younger years. There is so much up there, I don't think one could ever see everything in just one lifetime.

Sure, I come on here to find out who is looking at what, and how, and what they're doing it with. But in the end, in the dark, its just you and your scope alone outside with the wonders of nature.

Yes, It seems like there are more and more people that are doing Ap now days than just observing. I'm a member of a large club and we have fairly regular viewing sessions where it is sometimes a toss-up as to which group is represented more. I have to admit that one of the reasons that I am an observer only is because I'm really bad at AP. My field work is terrible and my processing is even worse. I think that because of the new technology available the Ap side of this hobby is much easier and more appealing than it has ever been before. Even though I'm not good (read very terrible) at AP work, I still enjoy hours behind the eyepiece stargazing in wonderment at the skies.

I do both. I enjoy visual observing and do more visual than AP. I really enjoy doing outreach events and sharing the views with the public. Then after the public goes home, I can settle in and do some serious observing.

I have been doing only visual in past year. I enjoy visual especially for outreach. I enjoy giving laser sky hops of sky and showing people objects in EP and giving a little bit of my COSMOS like lecture on distance like facts etc. Always had most fun when I had new people to show the skies to through scope, binoculars on parallax mount, and with laser pointer to make it more enjoyable.

Thank god for that I thought we were in the real minority.

I do the occasional shot of the Moon and (did you know it is fact just Moon, NOT "the Moon" because it is a Name), will get into imaging a LITTLE at some time but I so just enjoy looking

That would be me! I only just look. No AP for me. Don't have the time...nor yet the desire. I do love seeing the images that the very gifted and talented folks here post and share and think that it would one day be a great field to venture into, but for now I love the visual satisfaction and relaxing moments spent between my thoughts, my eyes and the cosmos.

Well my 20 x 80's and 10 x 50's are critical for "sucker hole" viewing here in Oregon for six months of the year. So yes I still look. But for the last 16 years I done 99% visual and seen just about everything I can see in my C8 in my yard. While I do now occasionally do stacking, EAA is my next "big" thing. Why? because in my mag 5 skies with my 8" I will be able to see things I would need a 16 or 20" to see at a dark site visually. When I go to a dark site, then yes. In fact this year am leaving my goto scope home and using an Alt/AZ mount to play with my ES102 triplet at the clubs nearby dark site (a state park that lets us use a day use area at night). I realized that I needed something to make astronomy interesting again and for me that EAA for the yard and a Refractor (my first which I got very cheaply new with double discount at Christmas) to revisit old friends visually with. It's my guess that EAA is going to be the 'goto' (pun intended) for those suburban/city dwellers in the future Except for planets, clusters, and the moon.
