    Default Outreach at restaurant venue

My club has been holding outreach events at a rural restaurant venue for a couple years. The restaurant sits on a hill with a dark view and low horizon. The agenda is that the restaurant puts its lights down after twilight and the patrons are treated to viewing through club members' telescopes.

Now a second venue has come up for club events, It is a micro brewery/restaurant again in a very rural and dark location.

My question is: how should I react to having either outreach events or regular club observing events at a place where alcohol is served? I rarely drink and certainly wouldn't do so at an observing event. I am concerned about having imbibed folks around my equipment. I am debating raising this issue and voting down use of such venues in the future.

Am I just a 'Get off my lawn!!' type here? Should I be concerned or just grit my teeth and shut up?

    Definitely, raise your concerns.

Chances are the majority of the patrons of the venue aren't there to get snot-slinging drunk but to enjoy a beer or two if any and have a nice meal. MOST folks should be ok.

However, I would think you do have a small risk of someone being a bit too far along into their cups and has the potential to run into gear, drop things, and be generally annoying. Of course, that could happen at any other venue too.

I think I'd probably go along with the plan, but I'd either take a cheap scope (and certainly cheap eyepieces!) or no scope at all on the first trip there to get a feel for the crowd.

At the very least, your club should discuss what to do if an inebriated person is making a nuisance. A plan of action is a good thing to have.

If it bothers you, either don't go or take a cheap rig as Bryan suggested.

We setup monthly in front of a row or restaurants and a couple of bars.
Besides deng way too talkative, the occasional drunk with the cup still in his/her hand can be easily deflected...ok, i send them so see thru other telescopes (yes, bad Pablo, but hey, my gear is safe) ...
Last time a person was seriously overdrunk, i had to give him the evil eye, he was getting ready to molest my equipment...
Hope my experience serves as a warning...or just to let you know, as usual, YMMV

A breathalyzer test....but seriously either don't go take a less expensive scope where you wouldn't mind if it got knocked over.

We occasionally hold an outreach at special events held at a local winery...with no problems encountered.

The most significant event I've encountered with someone who had a little too much to drink occurred in front of the public library. That night we were viewing the moon and he was so impressed he decided to invite others to view...sometimes too loudly! We finally had to rein him in...he was beginning to scare them away

Well, as long as no tour of the brewery has been done

No, I don't think you're a 'Get off my lawn!!' type; you're justifiably concerned. I would be too. I'm not a big drinker; a 6-pack of Bud Light or the equivalent is my max, and that's a rare thing these days. Never liked the hard stuff. However, when I'm out with any scope and having a beer, the limit for me is two. As it is with anyone who comes by and wants a peek. If you're wobbling, you ain't looking

Seriously, back about 10 years ago, a buddy came by with a case of beer; he had seven and I had one. I took out my only scope at the time, an 8" Skywatcher, and when I went inside to get my second beer, I heard a crashing noise and a few expletives, and coming back out I found both him and my scope on their sides in the grass. Ran over and checked my scope; didn't give a rats patooie about him! Fortunately, the scope just needed to be re-collimated, and oh yeah, my buddy was OK too. My wife was pretty ticked off, he left (didn't drive; lives around the corner), and the next day after collimating the scope I was good to go. My buddy also apologised profusely and offered to pay damages, which there thankfully was none.

So that's my experience with someone I know. Could've been worse. As everyone else says, just be on the lookout. And yes, I wouldn't bring any high end equipment.
Also, from what I understand, alcohol consumption doesn't help with vision. Decreased contrast sensitivity, dryness of the eye, etc.

    Hope this help your decision

I think that for the most part, the patrons will be polite and well-behaved. I don't use high-dollar eyepieces at outreach events, and I don't worry too much about kids (or adults) jostling my telescope. I always stand near the primary mirror to prevent damage to the most important end of the scope.

I have an aluminum "walker" that I used once when I suffered from a broken leg. I will sometimes place it near the eyepiece to give viewers something to hang onto besides the telescope when they look through it.

Rather than cancelling events at these venues, you might want to mention your concerns to the manager. Maybe they can work out some arrangement where one of the staff can offer assistance if any of the patrons start causing any trouble. After all, you're part of the restaurant's "entertainment" and are helping their business. It is in their interest to see things go smoothly.
