Default HEQ 5 - It was all going so well....

I thought today had been a real result in my Astro journey...

Got some spacers made which look great and do a perfect job, some hard wearing carpet for my workshop, found a ZWO OAG actually in stock with a supplier - last one which is now mine!, hopefully bought a 2nd hand ZWO 120MC and the HEQ5 arrived with belt mod pre installed.

HEQ5 is lovely, perfect for what i want.. Set it all up and now the problem starts. With the RA clutch fully off, its quite difficult to get it moving. At first i thought, ah, its just needs a few turns to spread the grease out and it'll be fine.. Nope, still very stiff.

Mounted the scope on it (80mm with the Atik 383 on the back so some good weight).. No matter what positon i put it in, the scope will not move the RA axis. Even if unbalance the scope it stays solid - with the cluth off!

&^%&(* There is no way to confirm the balance on the RA axis, so i think my only option is to call the supplier (who have been brilliant whist buying this (and in the past)) and say it needs to go back to the to sort out or replace.

Its too expensive and critical in operation for any error.. Not too worried about it really.. The real pain will be getting it shipped to them.

    Oh well,

Make sure the bottom roller bearing isnt skrewed in to hard or it will affect the balancing. Just skrew the bearing to (bed) and then loosen it a little so it dont pinch. Its the bearing thats located under the polarscope. Worth a shot. Had similar problem with the balancing after i made the service on mine. Or else an overhaul maybe its what it needs. Micke

Hrm yea that doesent sound right.

I had an Atlas Pro with a stiff RA axis. I found that if I cranked the altitude down to near zero I could balance it.

As much as I’d like to rip it apart, being new I’ll let someone else do it. Having read some on the problem, it’s not an isolated case. It was belt modded by the supplier, but I doubt that’s the cause. I’ll see what they say tomorrow

I thought 2nd time around things would be sorted... New head arrived today, but same problem again. Not quite as bad as the first one, but enough to decide that it’s got to go back.

Just to give you an idea, this was the first head on the DEC axis

As said before, it’s too expensive to accept something like this if it’s not 100%. A real pain as I was looking forward to using this over the holidays.

Not at all, you can see it swing back down from imbalance. Is not that really all you need?

I understand your concearn as it is 'brand new' and all and if your not comfortable with it by all means return it.

Did you carry on watching the DEC axis? That is with the telescope about 2 out of balance on the saddle!
