WooHoo, occultation chasers have a moment in the "sun"

For those who have a liking for the occult, or are curious and want to have a taste of it... you might like to have a look at the International Occultation Timing Association's website. Occultation chasing is a chance for amateur astronomers to make a real and significant contribution to science.

    International Occultation Timing Association, INTRODUCTION

How does this make a contribution? Well, think of an occultation of a star by an asteroid. The star is a point source. The asteroid actually has a measurable disk. As the asteroid crosses the star, depending on where one is with respect to the path traced by the shadow, the period that the star is not visible will vary, just like the period of totality of a total solar eclipse will vary on how far one is from the centre of the shadow. By having a bunch of telescopes all lined up north-south recording the transit all at the same time, the true profile of the asteroid can be obtained. This in turn allows for fine tuning of the true size and mass of the asteroid, and then for finer tuning of the asteroid's orbit. You can work out that this is no ho-hum set of calculations when some of these asteroids' orbits come pretty bloody close to Earth's...

The following image is from IOTA . It shows how the true profile of an asteroid can be worked out by having a series of telescopes, set at regular spacing apart, all recording the occultation at the same time:

First time I saw such a profile diagram, it was an OMG moment that sent a chill up my spine.

Looks like for me, Aldebaran will "un-occult" from behind the Moon when they are just about 8° above the eastern horizon, and as mucky as the atmosphere is here this evening, I'll likely not see anything. Dark clouds are heaving up in the west and will likely have the sky covered by the allotted time anyway.

Odd that the clouds are not showing up on radar...I think they've acquired stealth technology...

Astronomy has become unkind here lately. I've resorted to draping a blanket around a tripod so I can pretend I'm in a tee-pee...
