Default Stargazing With People Who Know What They Are Doing - Worth It!

For as long as I've been trying to watch the night sky, the only regret I have, is that I didn't try to do it with someone who knew what they were doing! LOL

It took me forever, but I finally joined a local astronomy club and this last Saturday night was my first club observing night. It was sketchy at first due to the cloud coverage, but as if a miracle, as we were sitting under the cloud cover sky, it cleared up beautifully for about an hour; and we took advantage!

I had my 10x50 binoculars and the only scope we used for the night (because we weren't sure how long the clear sky would last) was an 8" Dob. What a pleasure to have someone show me how to scan the sky and actually find things. A few objects I observed for the first time were:

There were others, but my point is that in all my time "trying" to look up, It took about an hour with an experienced observer to really open my eyes! Very excited to move forward from here.

Sounds like a great experience Vince. Hope you can get out again soon! The more practice one gets, the easier it becomes to find those cool objects in the sky.

Glad that you had a great experience. You can download a free program - Stellarium, which is a virtual planetarium for your computer. You can use it to familiarize yourself with the sky and it will offer you some target locations to plan a viewing session before you go outside.
