Default Going to my first Star Party tonight!

Tonight I'll be attending my first Star Party which is being held by the Astronomy club I just recently joined. We're suppose to have clear skies. I'll make sure I post my experience here.

Yes, do let us know how it goes! Like all parties, star parties vary quite a bit, but usually people are quite pleased with their first star party. I hope you enjoy it!

    Have fun.

    Remember, no white flashlights.
Park so the front of your car faces away from everyone, so if you end up having to leave, you don't shine headlights on them.
Don't forget the Cutters/OFF. Spray your socks, keeps the chiggers off of you.

I love star parties but also hate them because they always reignite my aperture fever lol!
Red lights all around (nothing white and no cell phone) and if driving kill lights well before approaching so you don't blow out everyones dark adapted pupils.

Ok, so the party was held at a state park located about 10 miles North West of the city I live in. Of course the sky was much darker then my back yard, however, I noticed that the South East part of the sky was still affected by the cities lights. At the beginning of the party, the organizers held a power point presentation that lasted about a half hour in an open amphitheater which gave a nice explanation of basic astronomy. To be honest, I very much enjoyed the presentation, however, I think it was a little too long because I noticed the group begging to thin out after about 20 minutes. There's a camp ground close to this and campers joined the party, but I think they thought it was going to be something different and left after a little.

After the presentation, we walked to the area where we were going to observe the sky. I set up my 6" dob, but on this night, I got more out of my 10x50 binoculars. I learned that I need to get a wider field eye piece for my scope. As I was observing, a woman came up from behind me and asked about my scope. The area was very dark and if you asked me today to describe this woman, I could not. She was an elderly woman from Maine named Sarah. She stated that she drove to South Carolina to watch the eclipse and was driving home stopping to camp along the way and attending Star Parties! On this night, I learned so much from this woman. As she showed me a way to look for constellations, right before my eyes I began to see them pop up on the night sky! Delphinus, Aquilia, Cepheus, Ophiuchus and so many more! I saw an amazing M13 in Hercules! Had to see at least a half dozen satellites floating overhead. And what I thought was a shooting star, Sarah pointed out was an iridium flare (my first one ever).

So over all I was a fantastic "First" star party. I learned so much and truly enjoyed myself. I was upset when I had to leave but took solace knowing that this was just the beginning of many more to come.
