Default Fog and clouds nearly every night this month

I'm noticing, maybe for the first time, it's always fogged and clouded completely in every night in the San Francisco Bay Area. For those of you who are well seasoned astronomers in this area, is this something that has been occurring regularly that I've just not noticed until now, or is this somewhat out of the ordinary for this time of the year? It's really not been good weather for getting the telescope out, lately.

Seriously I've never noticed so much overcast so consecutively every evening. I got to thinking that it may have something to do with the recent storm going through Mexico. This month (August) has really been cold, wet and overcast. I'm thinking the storm that went through Mexico recently caused this shift in weather here. What do you think?

Yeah, here too, I had a nice night two Saturdays ago, that's it.
Hey can't really blame the clouds, they're just practicing for the 21st.

As a fellow Bay Arean, I feel your pain. The last two years have been very foggy in summer, with only maybe 6 clear nights last year and maybe 4 or 5 this year (and of course that was with the moon up ). There is supposed to be a warming trend for the end of August which may result in more clear nights, hopefully. Otherwise, the best weather tends to be from late September to the end of October, so try to stay patient. This past winter and spring were horrible as well. When I first got my Z10 I had lots of clear nights, I would say that trend ended in 2014 with the lessening of the drought conditions.

We have had very few clear nights here in the last couple months. I hope once the summer heat is gone that we will have more clear nights. I'm hoping for clear skies on the 21st, but not going to hold my breath.

Does wind play a part in clarity when looking at objects in the night sky with a telescope? This past Saturday evening I was able to get the scope out because there wasn't a layer of fog rolling in over my area. It was pretty windy though. So windy a matter of fact that the lens shade on my telescope almost kept blowing off. I was looking at Jupiter and Saturn but the images really weren't that great. There was a ripple effect going on. Does wind play a part in image clarity?

Wind is a double whammy. There is obviously lots of turbulence, a fast moving column of atmosphere is not good for observing. And the fact that it plays havoc on the stability of your instrument, made worse with larger instruments and higher magnifications.

Thanks for the confirmation. I thought that was the issue but needed to be sure. A few weekends back I was looking at Jupiter and the color bands were really nice. However last Saturday evening I couldn't even see them.

Let's face it, Guys, if you're an Astronomer you've also got to be an Optimist!! The Jet Stream has been either sitting over or sliding up and down the UK for months now and we've had 99% cloud covered nights and what seems to be 1% clear skies.
