Default You can catch more flies with honey

So Friday night when I got home from my 230 mile commute I set up my AT 72, guide scope, camera and computer for a run at the Veil Nebula. I've been waiting for it to get in a good position for my attempt. At about 8:30, As I was doing my alignment and getting set up my back neighbor was still working on his yard. It's been really hot here in Southern California lately, so I get it...he was working in the evening while it's cool. But comming up on 9:00 he's got flood lights on, dude go get a beer and relax and shut the lights off.
So I poked my head over the fence and asked how much longer he was going to work and if he wanted a beer and I asked if he could shut off the lights when we has done. He got a little "snippy", I'm sure he was hot and tired...after all he is regrading and planting his back slope and it's been over 100* here for weeks. I explained what I was doing and invited him over to check it out. The other neighbor chimed in that he wanted to come over as well, the more the merrier right.
so they walked over and we just hung out around the scope and I explained the process and all the gear I had set up. I'm sure they were overwhelmed with it all. I invited them to bring their families over on Saturday.
They came by about 9:00 with their teen aged kids and I had put the C-9.25 on the mount for our viewing enjoyment. I explained how the GEM mount works and we took a tour of the sky. As we all know, Saturn is one of those OMG moments, as is Jupiter. After that we bagged M-11, M-13 and the moon it was time for the kids to get some sleep. It was really cool to see the interest in the kids and they asked lots of questions. The best part for me was that I held their attention for over an hour without a computer game in their hands.
The moral of the story is simple, I made new friends who now have more sensitivity to light pollution and my hobby. It's a "win-win" for all of us. Now if they can just get the dogs to stop barking...

    Clear skies,
    Bob

Great way to get the neighbors to turn off those flood lights. Not to mention getting kids off those games.

Thanks for the kind words guys. I will admit it was sort of self serving. But they did come to a good understanding of what the cause and affect is of light pollution is and I think I may have sparked a little bug in them for science. I'll keep them engaged as much as I can.

Great report and what a great way to "make friends and influence 'enemies'"...

I'm sure that the free beer helped too.

Oh, and if you find out how to make the neighbor dogs stop barking, write another post as I have several that get in a "twilight bark" for hours it seems.

    Well played Bob.

When I finally get set up here I must look at doing something similar with my neighbour the other side of the fence. They have just installed garden solar lights and leave them on even when they are away

What a great story, and a fine approach to a potentially sticky situation... and exposing the kids to it may plant some long-term seeds. Kudos to you, Bob!
