    Default ASASSN-17hx in Scutum

Sorry if this has been posted elsewhere, but a search on ASASSN-17hx did not show anything. Anyway, a new nova is showing in Scutum, and Sky Tools 3 lists it currently at mag 8.9. It lies about 40' northeast of mag 4.7 Gamma Scuti in the same FOV as a mag 9.3 star about 5.5' to its southwest. Here is a chart made using ST3:

    Thanks for the chart, Alan!

I'd already forgotten about this. We had a brief mention of it in this thread (linked S&T article) along with a new SN and comet!

Thanks Bryan. Some additional FYI, the progenitor is listed as a mag 19.1 star in the Gaia catalogue as Gaia Source ID 4104113350446549888.

I may try later with the ED80 since it is still in the garage. I haven't moved it back up to the upstairs room with the AR127/T2 yet after getting home. Grandson is asleep up there anyway, so don't want to bother him, or I would just get my 10x50s. Let me know if you note a reddish hue to it, which is somewhat typical for novae. I have annotated my IDSA already.

Done. Seems to be forming a squashed diamond pattern, being the eastern most point of the diamond on the long axis, opposite TYC 5703-2428-1. TYC 5703-0780-1 being the northern point on the short axis, and TYC 5703-0181-1 the southern.

    I think.

Anyway, it does indeed appear as the chart. I need to go back and look for the red hue. I did not notice it on my initial observation. Seems a hair dimmer than mag 8.9.

EDIT: A very subtle red hue. The TYC stars in the diamond, especially the brighter northern and western points, seem a tad more red than the nova.

EDIT EDIT: On second thought, it is as red as the afore mentioned TYC stars.

Dang. I didn't try that. Hold on...

EDIT: Doesn't seem to offer any improvement of the view. Still a bright little stellar point.
