Default Amazing views from the mountains.

Last week I went to my sister's for vacation. She lives in western North Carolina in a small town near the smoky mountains. I live in Orlando,Florida so I was so excited to see what the sky conditions are like there compared to my house. Here in Orlando, the Bortle number is 8. At my sister's it's 4. We left in the afternoon and didn't get to my sister's until 3am the next morning. The temperature when we arrived was 26F and clear skies. I almost fell over when I got out of the car....The stars were incredible. I had never been to this dark of an area before and the site of all those stars was amazing. I have a 10" Dob but couldn't get it in the car. ( should have left some people at home..lol ) I could see open clusters that I needed my scope at home to see. I could even see fuzzy patches in the sky of what I believe were globular clusters. Needless to say, I didn't get to sleep until 5am. The next 3 nights were perfect weather for star gazing. I did have my 10x40 binoculars which made the viewing evening even more spectacular. All and all, this was the best vacation ever. I am going back in August as my lives near ground zero for the upcoming Solar eclipse. Looking forward to hopefully more clear skies.

Well now you went and done it ;-)))

I have been places where the sky was so dark that the Milky Way cast a faint shadow on moonless nights. My advice is that when in Orlando try and put the splendor out of your mind. Of course, while planning on how to get back to the splendor.

You got that right Rogan. Went out last night after we got home and was disappointed. Good thing I have a 10" light bucket. My dob does well with all this LP in Orlando but I might have to see if my wife wants to move.Where do live in Georgia? We come home on 23 through Clayton and on to Atlanta.

I know what you mean. First time I got under dark skies for the 1st couple of hours I was sitting with open mouth and then remembered that I brought a scope . Take your ETX-80 with you next time it will show you a ton.
