Default Clear skies!!? 1 star please

I usually find it an exciting challenge when moving from one location to another. I remember last year when travelling to Turkey how disorientated I was, stepping outside and looking at the direction of sunset and then trying to identify familiar stars or constellations towards the south. A very unusual feeling when, after getting used to the placement of objects, in my case very south in Johannesburg area, and then suddenly facing the impossible task of navigating and finding one's orientation on the globe.

I thought of packing in my 10x50's just in case I felt like hunting down some friends in the night sky. You know, things can sometimes get a bit lonely when out in far places by oneself.

So I discovered there was a nice open balcony on the 16th floor and took the elevator all the way up to do what I like most- tilt my head backwards and look at the stars. Clear skies they say and no sign of clouds or rain during this season they say.

Not One. Took out my phone and ran Sky View free. Vega? It is open to the North with no buildings or obstructions. West?? Scorpio are you still there? Mars where have you gone?

I cannot see 1 star. Nothing. I really looked everywhere. Wait there is something! No, it is a plane.

The poor people who live here. Remind me of a Thread on this forum not long ago that linked to a article about the absence of stars in mega cities on how those inhabitants are deprived from any stars.

All of a sudden my "light polluted" Johannesburg location seems like a dark site. Guess you don't appreciate what you have untill you don't have it anymore. So it is time to stop complaining about the almost useless skies where longer than 2 minute exposures becomes impossible due to light pollution....
... it could have been much worse...you could have lived in New Delhi!

Couple of nights in Mumbai and Dhaka and a similar experience. Hyderabad yielded some stars. Back home now and been cloudy since my arrival except for Friday evening when I managed to get some quick bino views towards the south.

Hmm. I've seen bright stars, Vega, Aldebaran, Capella from the middle of Times Square. I suspect your sky was overcast or any bright stars were blocked or unavailable.
