Default DarkSiteFinder (to the Sticks and Beyond)

Planning a short recon trip tonight. After studying DarkSiteFinder.com, I've picked a spot 60 miles from my house to 'see what I can see'. The Dark Site map doesn't exactly color code in the Bortle 9 scale, but this spot is definitely in a grey zone. I'm expecting a 2+ . Travel along with me on Google! Just go east of Grainola OK to the Sooner Cattle Company, then north on County Rd 4551 to the Kansas state line. There's a little reservoir with a gravel dam. I'm gonna plop my butt right on that dam! If it's as good as I hope, I'll make it a regular trip.

That certainly looks like that's in the middle of nowhere. To be honest you probably don't need to go that far looking at the map there aren't that many sources of LP near you.

You're right, Dave, 10 miles west would be fine, but the Wife wants to see the MW and the Perseids the best she can. Heck, it's 25 miles to a good Mexican restaurant, and 50 to any other kind, so driving is a way of life around here.

Thats certainly in the sticks! Must be a great place for astronomy though. Looking forward to the report of your trip. Good luck!

That site looks to be great for darkness, but beware that the water could increase your chances for a lot of bugs (ie, mosquitos). Here is another website I use for darkness. It is a LOT more optimistic than the map you use. Plus it allows you to record your darkness readings if you use an SQM device. See what you think. Light pollution map
