I don't trust the longevity of telescope electronics (and don't care for the added cost--I want my money going toward OPTICS). Star-hopping can be slow and, at times, frustrating, but I like the intimacy and familiarity that comes from learning the sky. I'm 53 years old, but still have the images of some of the star patterns I used to find deep-sky objects burned into my brain from my teenage years.

The mount for mine came with a goto. I started 31 years ago learning by star maps, searching, and perseverance. Half the fun was the accomplishment of finding the faint objects above my head.

I suppose I should start learning to use it. I think a goto has it's uses for things like dates or introducing someone to the night sky so they don't have to wait while you look around and find things. But for normal observing, I prefer to do the work and know where I am by my own knowledge.

I have a goto and use it in both goto mode and manual slewing. I will use stellarium to find general direction of easier M objects. Head outside to try and find the object. Then confirm with goto that I actually found it or I jacked it up and start all over. Seems to help me learn the sky.
