Default Joshua Tree in March anyone?

I'm just going to throw this out there to see if there is any interest. I'm sorta planning a trip out to Joshua Tree National Monument in March to try and catch Comet Lovejoy. The new moon will be the week of 3-15-15 and Lovejoy should be in Casiopia at that time. The desert is amazing in the spring and the temperature is very nice that time of year. I'm thinking that Cottonwood group campground would be good and it's a "Blue Zone" for the dark sky. If there is enough interest, I'll reach out to the Park and try to get a reservation for the group. The Park may be interested enough to organize a comet watching event and a impromptu star party if that is of interest as well.

Let's see if there are any takers and go from there.

    Clear skies,
    Bob

I'm game! I live in Apple Valley and grew up in 29. A good friend of my son's is an NPS Ranger and is being transferred from Death Valley to JTNP. Maybe I can line up something with him to do during daylight hours. Keep me posted; PM is fine.

Terry I will keep you in the loop. I'll send you a PM as things develop. I'm hoping Caely will chime in on this as She lives in 29P. I have reached out to a friend at OPT and I will try to get them involved as well.

I live in 29 too. I've met Caley and have observed with her at Sky's The Limit Observatory on at least three occasions. I live just ten minutes from the north entrance to JTNP, but was surprised to see that Cottonwood campground is a 1 hour, 8 minute drive from my house. (It's a big park.)

So... I'm interested but it will depend on my job as far as whether or not I can go. Please keep me posted. PM is okay.

    Hey Gregg,
JTNP is a huge place for sure. I have traditionally camped at Jumbo Rocks or Hidden Valley, but the site are so close together that the heat signature from all the camp fires can be problematic. Cottonwood is a group campsite and we may be able to control the fires if we're the only ones there. I'm pretty sure I'm going with or without a group from AF, im trying to get my buddy from North Carolina out here to join us.

Jumbo Rocks is at 4400 elevation, while Cottonwood is at 3000 feet. The DSO's would be 1,400 feet closer at Jumbo Rocks. And I'm not just sayin' that cuz it's way closer to my house.

You can count me in, Big Guy!!

I, like you, am hoping some of the forum members will jump in. Come on, folks!!

I've only seen a sky similar to that once in my life, in the middle of the North Atlantic on the QEII, on the way to London. I wasn't into astronomy at the time and didn't really appreciate what I was seeing. (regrettable)

I'm VERY much looking forward to this and would NOT miss it for anything in the world. This is a "once in a life-time" opportunity for me. I'll be there with bells on!!

The fact that it's twenty-five hundred (2500) miles from my house, means absolutely nothing to me. (If you want to play, you have to go where the game is!)

I'll definitely have the C-1100, CGEM-DX and cameras with me. I'll try to bring my ES-127, CGEM and all my EPs, depending upon what the "luggage arrangement" is with AMTRAK. I'll will most certainly bring along my appetite. I'm counting on some of those great culinary talents you keep bragging about. Proof's in the pudding, Buddy!!

Would absolutely love to meet some of you folks!!

    Can't wait 'til then!!
