    Default Your oldest astronomical equipment?

    Okay, this should be interesting!

What is the oldest piece of astronomical equipment that you use regularly? It can be telescope, eyepiece or other accessory.

Although I still have the 50mm objective that I upgraded my cheap 50mm refractor with from the early 80's, it's in storage. I do still use the 1.25 inch fitting 40mm and 9mm Kellners that I got in the early 80's for the 50mm upgrade with my Celestron C8 Classic, which I bought around 1990. My Carl Zeiss Jena Jenoptem 10x50W's are from around 1988-89 or so, because I didn't have them for Halley's Comet, but did have them when I got the C8. Only used those during my hiatus years from around 2000 to 2013. But getting back to using the C8 again in the last couple of months.

Looking forward to hearing some fascinating stories about this!

My Jason refractor is 23 years old. I received it when I was 8. Saw my first glimpses of Mars, Saturn & Jupiter through it. It takes those weird .965 EP's. The finderscope is missing the secondary lens & the tripod is slightly less stable then a table at a truck stop diner. But I love it.

My old orange-tube C-90 from around 1984. It makes a great little grab and go, on a wedged single-arm fork mount. Polar aligning at my home site is a snap (no wedge angle adjustment required). It's not quite so easy when I have to adjust the wedge, but once aligned, it tracks beautifully. It runs on an AC synchronous motor, so I need to carry an inverter for star parties.

The only drawback is the permanent factory mis-collimation. Quality control at Celestron suffered in the pre-Halley rush. And the eyepiece selection is limited, as it uses 0.965" eyepieces.

This was made VERY well... Like a tank! Very heavy though. Probably over a pound (0.5 kilo).
So, yeah, it might just be in better shape! I have the bulb housing for the illumination. Just no battery in it.

My oldest gear is probably ME!

But seriously, I still have and use my old 1969 Cave Astrola mount on which my 8" newt sits, and from 1971 I still have in perfect shape (and it get used at least weekly) a Gayland Optical Co "GALOC" 16.3MM Erfle EP.
