Looks like the right specs. The key is how it performs in cold temps.

Is there a consensus on a model that is the best value?

I'd absolutely love to use a laser pointer. It would be invaluable for use as a way to point out stars and objects in the sky to my family and friends, so maybe for once they would know exactly what I'm talking about. Unfortunately, I live on an Air Force base, and I cant take that risk of hitting an aircraft that might come out of nowhere.

I hadn't thought of using my laser pointer with my finder scope until tonight. Far from using some fancy setup, I secured my laser pointed to the finder scope....by hand, until I got near my second alignment star for the evening. Next up is probably some thick rubber bands. But this particular pointer works by a press button on the side, so I have to press it to make it work. If I think I'll be needing one to be on while I set up alignment, then I'll have to invest in a more expensive one.

Three weeks ago when I was in California, my nephew got it and used up the batteries fast. Fortunately the thing's in my hands now.

I have a remote switch on mine. It is basically a pressure switch on the end of a short cable. If you are going to use the laser pointer for alignment you really should get a mount for it. They make mounts for them that basically look like mini finder mounts.

Those things are amazing1 I got mine from ebay for about 14.99. I keep one in my survival bag at all times, and one for my Astronomy set up. I don't use it for alignment or anything, but it makes teaching people constellations very easy!

How close to a plane is too close? A few degrees? 20 degrees? I am not planning on playing "chicken" I just want to know how diligent to be.
